Installing Java runtime environment
I am new to fedora, and i like it so far, but as a person fresh from windows, i feel like i am in over my head and i know i have a lot to learn. I just spent last night until 2 in the morning figureing out how hook it up to an existing ethernet. It said that the plugin detecting thing could not install so i have to do it manually. I downloaded it to the desktop and ran it with terminal and pressed enter until it asked if i acepted the terms, i typed yes and then it ended.
Can someone help me please? i would appreciate it very very much if you could break it down into simple steps for a newbie. Thanks for you time.

You can confirm it by 'rpm -qa | grep java' to see what's installed. I've got both Sun Java and Icedtea installed:
[bob1@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep java
java_cup-0.10-0.k.6jpp.1
tzdata-java-2007j-1.fc8
java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-17.fc8
cairo-java-1.0.5-7.fc7
glib-java-0.2.6-8.fc7
java-1.7.0-icedtea-1.7.0.0-0.22.b23.snapshot.fc9
libgconf-java-2.12.4-8.fc7
libgtk-java-2.8.7-4.fc7
java-1.7.0-icedtea-plugin-1.7.0.0-0.22.b23.snapshot.fc9

So, what are you trying to do with it? Plug-in for Firefox or something else?

So, let's see what happens with Firefox. Open up your browser and in your address line type in about:plugins

Sorry, mistyped at first - it should be 'plugins' not 'config'. As you scroll down, you should see some Java items if it worked. Also, after restarting Java, you should be able to go here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and get confirmation that it's installed and working.

How about typing in a terminal: "which java". Mine returns:
[bob1@localhost ~]$ which java
/usr/bin/java

Also, sign into root in that terminal: "su -", give your password and then type:
Quote:
|
yum -y install compat-libstdc++-33 compat-libstdc++-296
|
That may help the Fedora version of Java (IcedTea) to work with your games. Let's hope.
