cannot transfer specific files off dvdrom

I just bought a dvd for my parents, hoping to play it on my FC7 desktop. Unfortunately, xine, mplayer, VLC, totem, and severall other apps claim that the MRL dvd:// cannot be handled. I have all the required libs, libdvdcss, libdvdread, etc, and would have listed this as a hardware problem, except for one thing: I decided to try just copying the files to a folder, but none of the .VOB files would copy. everything else on the disc copied fine, but not the movies. This has happened on two discs now, and my parents are threatening to return to MS if Linux cant play legal DVDs. Can anyone please offer any insight? Thanks!

I haven't tried it myself, but many in this forum will vouch for this method. I think dangermouse rather likes this website

It didn't work =( . I already had all the packages, but I'm not sure its a video engine problem - a video engine should not impact my ability to copy files off the disk. Also, only the .vob files gave an I/O error, all the others copied. Is this some new copy-protection scheme gone awry? Thank you for your reply though =)

No good. It dosnt seem to be able to read the .VOBs at all. i cant even drag and drop to my desktop off the disk. Every other file on the disk, yes, but not the VOBs, which are the movie. the fact that only the .VOBs produce an I/O error makes me think the MPAA's fat little fingers are involved somehow...

Try working with it in a terminal. This may give you more feedback on what is actually going on.
