Desktop-effects and Ati HD2600 Mobility

Just bought a new laptop, an Asus F8 series with an radeon HD 2600. Fedora 8 kicks with vesa which is more than enough for the install. The first thing I did after the installation was installing the ati drivers from livna which gave me an improvement in resolution. The problem now is that I cannot switch desktop effects on.

Any ideas?

Yup, follow leigh's instructions to downgrade X.

It should be in the How To Section under How to ATI and compiz or something like that.

BTW were you able to get the native resolution?

Thanks for the tip, Dies. I'll try that right away. About the native resolution, the screen is supposed to go up to 1400x1050 but fedora only gives me 1280x800, even with a modes line on the display subsection of the xorg.conf. Any idea about that?

Update: Thanks a lot mate! It worked like a charm.

Good, glad you got your eye candy going.

As for the resolution thing, not yet, though I refuse to give up since I find the resolution it sets way too annoying for everyday use.

So far, only SUSE has been able to set the res correctly for me with fglrx, but then I had no accelaration, plus I just don't like that distro so that will be a last resort type of thing.

The latest Sabayon also reported the correct res with fglrx but it didn't quite look like it to me. Though it was way easier on the eyes than Fedora, there was room for improvement.

So definitely let me know if you come across something that works.
