Sound in qemu-hypervised windows xp

Hi,

I have installed Windows XP home edition as a virtual machine for a fedora 8 host using virt-manager and qemu. It seems almost good: basic functionality of the winxp virtual machine works but I'm now realizing I don't have sound. It seems possible to add devices in the details tab of the virtual machine but none that seems sound-related. Anyway, it is clear that no sound device is present in the Windows XP guest although the fedora 8 host system accesses the sound device properly with full-range sound capabilities as a result.

Didn't yet find any clear directions on how to get sound; maybe I should try other virtualization software like Xen (?) or VMware? Does one then get sound for a fedora 8-hosted Window XP (home edition) guest?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your tip , it was easy to get sound for a Windows XP Home guest in VirtualBox. It seems possible to have sound in qemu-hypervised xp as well but I didn't have the patience to work it out. In particular, the relation between virt-manager and qemu was problematic, couldn't find any documentation on that one.

What about VirtualBox-updates, is there any repo covering VirtualBox in order to use yum?

I don't think it's necessary for you to use yum.You can get the latest version (1.54)at the site http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.You'll find a binary package for Fedora, just try.

For what it's worth, in addition to -soundhw all on the qemu command line, I also found it necessary to set the following env vars prior to running qemu:

export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa
export QEMU_AUDIO_DAC_FIXED_FREQ=48000
export QEMU_AUDIO_ADC_FIXED_FREQ=48000
export QEMU_ALSA_DAC_BUFFER_SIZE=4096

Worked in my setup, anyway.
