VLC/XviD/Livna = Driving me nuts

Okay, so I got my freshly installed Fedora 8 up and running, everything is working like a charm... I'd say its quite an improvement over 7 personally.

Well, just like in F7, i have the same problem with F8... VLC just wont work... I try installing via Livna, and it doesn't open.... I did manage to get it open when experimenting installing things in a certain order, but wont play any video files and about 99.9% of them are XviD. Then i tried disabling livna and used the Frshrpms repo, I get depandancy errors (required libdvbpsi, even though it was installed).

So here I am, I have uninstalled vlc, mplayer, and everything associated with them that I could find... What should I do...

And to note: I have rm -rf ~/.vlc ~/.mplayer between each attempt at installation.

I'm ready to burst, can anyone help me out?

Have a go using the install script, it might be worth removing vlc first though

It appears that this script doesn't install VLC, according to the list.

Yes it does, if you pick the option dvd playback, it will install it along with all the codecs plugins you need for media except realplayer

Thanks for the tip, I tried the script....

Unfortunately, it didnt work....

I did

Code:
yum remove xvidcap vlc-devel vdrsync mjpegtools-gui mjpegtools mencoder dvdstyler devede xine vlc mplayerplug-in mplayer-gui mplayer x264 avidemux dvdstyler ffmpeg ffmpeg-libs gstreamer-ffmpeg libquicktime-utils mencoder mjpegtools mjpegtools-gui mjpegtools-libs transcode vdrsync vlc-core x264-gui xine-lib-extras-nonfree y4mscaler xvidcore libdvdcss libdvdplay libdvdread libdvbpsi xine totem totem-xine xine-lib xine-lib-extras-nonfree amarok totem-xine-mozplugin libquicktime libdvdnav gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad faac faad
beforehand. I'm not sure whats going on here... I can hear audio with the XviD files, and WMV plays (guess I should've mentioned that earler), but no video on avi's.

You didnt need to remove all those programs, anyway whats done is done, i suggest running the script again, and keep a lookout for any error messages etc, you might have a conflict etc, and it didnt install all what was needed etc

Thats the thing. I performed the uninstall prior to the script... When I ran the script, I watched out for errors and didnt find any - so I'm pretty much stumped right now. Is there a file I can just copy somewhere to get XviD working?

I know a good chunk of linux to squeeze everything I could ever need out of it... But, when it comes to codecs in linux, I'm a lost puppy.
