playing video in F8

ive been using fedora for a while now and i just upgraded to F8. i can normally use fedora with out any problems but the thing is when i try and play a video it will say i need the codecs so i would presume i would need to install gstreamer-ffmpeg, ffmpeg and ffmpeg-libs but when i search for them in the package manager there not their. when i open the video it says it will download them for me but it wants me to pay 23 cents...or something like that anyway. i know thats not much at all but still im not going to pay. i know i can just use VLC but i wanted to use totem so was there anyway to get the codecs without paying?

Try ( the first link was the livna-release which enables all the non-free bits ) installing the gstreamer plugins .

su
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
yum install gstreamer* --exclude=gstreamer*devel

if leigh123 didn't answer your problems heres some extra help, assuming that your using the xine backend for totem that is

download the livna rpm for fedora 8 from the link posted. run the file you downloaded.

install:
gstreamer-plugins-base
gstreamer-plugins-bad
gstreamer-plugins-bad-extras
gstreamer-plugins-ugly
gstreamer-plugins-good
gstreamer-plugins-ffmpeg
ffmpeg
ffmpeg-libs

for DVD's install:
libdvdnav
libdvdplay
libdvdread
libdvdcss
xine-lib-extras
xine-lib-extras-nonfree

my totem plays videos (DVD's etc) with no problems now. hope that helps.

What leigh123@linux and s.v.g. said worked for me. But if you have installed what they recommended and are still getting this when you drop in a DVD and Totem auto-starts:
Quote:
Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not
have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disc.

Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able
to play this media.
Here are some simple things to try before giving up:
  1. Have Totem running and open on your screen before you drop in the DVD. Movie starts.

    or this...

  2. Close the plugin warning. Drop down the "Movie" menu. Click on "Open". Navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. Select all of the numbered VOB files (don't select the VIDEO_TS.VOB file) and click on the "Add" button. Movie starts.

    or this...

  3. Do step #2 and double-click on a VOB file in the playlist. Movie starts (at that VOB's point in the movie).

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

UPDATE: After reading the reply below, I decided to play around with several of the media players. I removed all players, related packages, codecs, and libraries that I could without breaking something unrelated (like openoffice which requires some gstreamer packages). I installed the players one at a time along with only the packages needed to play a DVD, and I removed everything again after each test. I liked Xine most, and all it required to play a DVD was to also install the xine-lib-extras & xine-lib-extras-nonfree libraries.

I don't ever use totem for DVD as it sucks and there are better DVD media players like Xine
