Need Help Buying a Portible Media Player (MP3 Player)

I am looking for my second ever mp3 player and I am hoping to twick the heck out of it and put linux on it. I was looking into an ipod, but theres a lot of linux people against it and I am with them for the most part (mainly against apple). But I want to hack an mp3 player. I wouldn't mind getting non-apple product, but I want to make sure there are linux OS built for it and games for it under linux. I know the plus side of ipods, there are tons and tons of applications out there for it. Like ipodlinux. My question, should I get an ipod to install linux on it? and what gen. of the ipods should I get as well? I know Gen3 is supported pretty good, but is Gen4 and 5 supported? or Should I get just some mp3 player and which one will support linux?

I wanted to:
- Install linux
- games
- music
- movies
Games like doom (idoom) and half life and nes and snes (if possible)

I would recommend a Nintendo DS Lite with an M3DS Simply adapter. That's what I use, and it works great. Use Moonshell for media playback (including Vorbis and FLAC), DSOrganize for a nice organizer, and there are tons of great commercial and homebrew games . Someone has ported Doom (check out http://www.dev-scene.com/ for a good starting place for homebrew info). There is also DSLinux .

EDIT: It looks like there's an M3DS Real now with a bit more functionality than the Simply (wasn't out when I got my Simply). Depending on what you want to do, it may or may not be worth the premium (probably $20-30 or so).
