Assistance with Gnome Screensaver

DPMS is working properly on my FC6 system. I have no problems using it to blank screen, standby, suspend, and timeoff. I would like to get gnome-screensaver-2.16.3-1.fc6 to kick in before DPMS does, but it just doesn't seem to want to join the party no matter how I set my preferences.

Here are a few things I've tried...
- Checked, Double Checked, and Triple Checked preferences using gnome-screensaver-preferences
- Used gconf editor to review the settings and compare to working systems (F7 and F8)
- Removed and Re-installed gnome-screensaver
- Downloaded gnome-screensaver src and did an rpmbuild, then installed
- Googled high and low for an answer

It is still somewhat of a mystery to me what process or daemon activates the screensaver. Just guessing I would suspect that a daemon is either not running or is not configured to spot when the idle time is reached to activate the screensaver. Would appreciate any suggestions on logs to check or things to try.

Doesn't that beat all. After two days of trying to track this down I figured out what was missing right after posting my question here. It turns out that the gnome-screensaver daemon is not being launched when the gnome session starts up. So now my question is, what script or location does the daemon normally get started from?

Not sure what normally starts it, but you can always add it to your startup programs

System>Preferences>Session

Of course if you have a lot of users then you really need to find the right place.

Have you tried re-installing?

Appreciate the reply Dies. I did find the path you suggested just before seeing your post, but as you said it only makes an entry for the current user under ~/.config/autostart/gnome-screensaver.desktop. I have tried the reinstall and looked over the list of files in the gnome-screensaver-2.16.3-1.fc6 rpm. To me it seems like there should be a gnome-screensaver.desktop file under either /etc/xdg/autostart or /usr/share/gnome/autostart. The autostart .desktop files for gnome-power-manager and gnome-volume-manager are under /usr/share/gnome/autostart and they come with the rpm. Next step is to take a look at the F7 and F8 systems to try and track it down there. At least it is working now.

If that's the case then just make your own desktop file, copy one of those files then open it from the command line and replace/rename as appropriate then drop it in the same directory with the others.
