Virtual PC/Vista Ultimate/Athlon x64-freeze

This is my first attempt at Linux and I know nothing much about it but willing to give it a try.

Am running a virtual machine within x64 vista/Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is my first choice option, although I could try VM/x32 on XP Home or XP Pro.

I have a Athlon x64 machine running Vista Ultimate (2Gb).

I have tried installing 'Fedora x86_x64' but Virtual PC tells me it cannot run a 'x86_x64' kernel as it is only being offered a 'i1586' (whatever that is) kernel. This rather puzzles me as I would have thought my x64 processor would run this version of Fedora. Maybe it is a failing in Virtual PC?

Then I tried i386 Fedora and it runs for a second or two then freezes. Copy and Paste does not seem to work externally to the VM (presumably it is not supposed too). So the last two lines which I have typed manually are :-

pnp: 00:0c: ioport range 0x440-0x44f has been reserved
pnp: 00:0c: iomem range 0x0-0x0 could not be reserved

I have run this several times and have lowered the VM memory allocation to 128 MB starting with 1024 - all with the same result.

Looking for any ideas as I am really stuck.

It is very possible that Virtual PC just emulates a 32-bit-system and can't handle 64-bit-systems.

Your problem with the i386-system is a little weird. Copy & Paste does indeed only work after you've installed the Virtual Machine Additions, however that only works with Windows-versions or OS/2.

Try to use this guide while installing:

Maybe it works then. Worked for me.

I have since gone on to VirtualBox - AMD64 version. It has gone further than VirtualPC and is currently installing as I write.

Interestingly enough, I got the same error message (only i1586 kernel is available) when trying to install Fedora x86_64. This leads me to think this message comes from Vista rather than any of the VM controllers - but can't be sure. So VirtualBox/Fedora i386 is cracking on.

I have asked for all the additional packages just to see what they are all about. I did read in the notes somewhere that I can only use VirtualBox with Vista Host (and presumably XP) within an ''Administrative' mode Account rather than 'Limited' - this apparently will be sorted out later.

All the packages combined require over 4 Gb in the first hard disk partition. The recommended memory setting in VirtualBox (64Mb) is simply not enough (not a surprise). I went for 768 Mb for the installation and hooked up (I hope) my ethernet adapters - one wired the other wireless. Not sure about USB ports or Serial ports. Will get to them later. But physical connection to the floppy disk drive (yes I do have one) and DVD/CD drive seems easy enough.

So could be abandoning VirtualPC. It is almost as if Microsoft don't want Fedora working within a Windows host machine. They do give a full list of their own older operating systems - but then so do VirtualBox.

Yes exactly the same. In fact it hasn't got as far as producing any graphics before it freezes - so the conditions are the same in both instances.
