Nvidia Video Card Recommendations
Hello everyone!
I am fed up with my ATI card and tired of tinkering with it to try to get it to work with any Linux distro. The good news is that this means I am looking around for a new video card. My plan is to go Nvidia for better Linux drivers/support.
I'm currently running an ATI Radeon 300, which is sufficient for my needs when I run Windows or whatever. I do not do much gaming, but I do like the display to look nice and I do photo-editing and the occasional 2D CAD work on this particular machine. I am thinking of getting the GeForce 8800 GT in the future, but for now I'd like to stay in a lower price range. The card will need to work with PCIe, but I'm willing to make case mods if necessary for a larger card. I would like it to have DVI output.
Right now I have my eye on this PNY card on newegg - ttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133172
Any ideas? Thanks for the help...I'm finding video cards in Linux to be a bit tricky.

Hello:
For a list of supported GPU's (with latest official driver release - Version: 100.14.19) see here : Appendix A. Supported NVIDIA GPU Products
The card that you are looking at has had a problem or two with some hardware combinations and the latest official nVidia drivers, however, there is a Beta driver that corrects the issue(s). You can read more about the Beta driver here : Version: 169.04
If you have any further queries, there is an nVidia Linux support forum located here. [monitored by nVidia folks ]
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/foru...?s=&forumid=14
All that being said, the card you are looking at should be fine.

FYI: The 7200 and the 7300 chips will lock your system up when used with the 100 series driver. They work fine with the 96xx driver though. I haven't tried with the 169 beta driver yet... Hmm, I think I'll do that now.

For the record, nVidia 8600 GT cards have been available for some time now at Newegg with rebates that take the price below $100, sometimes well below. They are fast and should not have compatibility issues with any nVidia drivers.

I have a 7300GS that works well with the "100 series" driver without ever a lockup with FC6 and F7. I recently picked up a GeForce 7600GS but haven't installed it yet maybe later this week though.

See the sig. Works great for me. EVGA is quality.
EDIT: Oops. Not very detailed in my sig. Don't know the model number off the top of my head, but it's got DVI (rather than VGA) and DDR2

That particular error may be specific to the "LE" card versions. I'm glad the 100 series is working well for you.

I also use a 7950 GT which you can get now for under 175USD I think. It is a pretty powerful card and I have had no problems with it.

I have the 512MB version of the GeForce 7300GS that works great for the price. I can play Battlefield 2 at 1024x768, no AA or AF but all settings on High and still get in between 30 and 50 FPS. The card's only $70!

Are you sure it's actually 512 dedicated? My 7300 shows up as 512, but it is really 256 virtualized out to 512. The price seems about right too.
