Stop Command Line Beep

All:
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop running Fedora 8. It runs great, but one problem has has me stumped. The system beep (either on the command line or in the GUI) is EXTREMELY loud! I went to System -> Prefs. -> Hardware -> Sound in Gnome and got the GUI beep to stop but I cannot turn it off under the command line outside of X. My usually acute Google skills have failed me and so I now turn to you, my Linux brethren (and sister..en?) for help. where is the option to turn off the system beep?

Also, even now that I have disabled the system beep in Gnome I still receive a loud beep when the logon screen comes up. If I disable the beep in the command line will it end this as well?

Thank you for all of your help.

Check in your BIOS and you may have an option to COMPLETELY disable the PC Speaker.

Another option that just hit me is you could open your computer case and unplug that SOB.

In my notes I have

su root
modprobe -r pcspkr ; echo "install pcspkr :" >>/etc/modprobe.conf

which If I remember correctly I got from an earlier release notes or possibly install guide

I certainly have a pcspkr kernel module installed (/sbin/lsmod) so you could try unloading it.

you could also try by blacklisting the module
Code:
su -
echo "blacklist pcspkr" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

what happens if you add something like:

'set bell-style visible' or 'set bell-style none'

that should change the 'beep' to a 'flicker' or to nothing, its in /etc/inputrc. you will need to restart or log back in again to see the effect

How about looking in System > Preferences > Hardware > Sound > ? There's a system beep tab.

Edit: Someday I'll read the posts before I reply

Thank you FriedChips.

I use Fedora 7 on my Dell Inspiron 6400. After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.23.1-21.fc7 to 2.6.23.8-34.fc7, beeps occurred at the log on screen, when I scrolled to the top and bottom of man files and sometimes at close down. The usual SoundOnLogin=false and set bell-style none workarounds didn't stop the beep.

Your "blacklist pcspkr" entry in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist worked for me.

Hopefully you found out how to do this. Just in case, you go to System->Preferences->Hardware->Sound, click in System Beep tab and deselect Enable System Beep.

If you are using gnome-terminal do the following:

Edit > Current Profile select the General tab and uncheck Terminal Bell

Edit: I read the heading, not the whole question. That should remove just one of your annoyances - as for the rest... sorry, I'm not sure.
