Fedora 8 installer "exited abnormally [1/1]"
I'm trying to upgrade my Fedora 7 installation to Fedora 8. My computer has no DVD reader so I've downloaded the DVD iso to one of my Windows hard drive partitions. I'm booting from the Fedora 8 rescue CD, selecting to install or upgrade and pointing it to the partition where the DVD iso image resides. Then I get the following messages:
Running anaconda 11.3.0.50, the Fedora system installer-please wait...
Install exited abnormally [1/1]
Sending termination signals...done
etc...
You may now reboot your system
What's wrong? I've checked the sha1sum of both the rescue CD and DVD image. Is there a way to actually check the correctness of the rescue CD itself? If so, how?
I used the same technique to install Fedora 7 in the first place. Could I use the Fedora 7 rescue CD to upgrade to Fedora 8?
Thanks
Jim

Apparently this has been reported: Bugzilla Bug 407221: install exited abnormally [1/1]. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407221. However, the severity is marked as low which does not make sense unless there is some way to work around the problem. Is there?
Interestingly, according to that web page the bug was opened today, about an hour from now. Yes, in the future.
Also, you can't use Fedora 7 rescue CD to install Fedora 8. So for now I'm stuck. Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

OK, so it was open about 12 hours ago. That web page is using a 24 hour clock.

Hello:
I have no idea what causes anaconda to exit that way ?
So just a few suggestions.
If you have both a Vfat and Ntfs partition available, try the iso image from a directory on each and see if it makes any difference.
If all else fails, you could opt for a http or ftp install / upgrade or even a Yum upgrade if you wish.
There are some notes here if you have not already seen them: Upgrading Fedora

I was thinking of trying the upgrade through yum although it appears a little complicated and isn't officially supported. But now I don't know that I want to upgrade at all. I tried booting the Fedora 8 live CD and got the following messages:
Loading vmlinuz0.......
Loading initrd0.img..................
Ready.
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
0:15
Unable to boot - Please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
What is feature "0:15"?
Anyway, if the Fedora 8 kernel requires something my computer doesn't have, then I guess I'm stuck at Fedora 7 at least on that machine.

It appears that Bugzilla Bug 407221 has been fixed under 367731 (See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=367731).
According to the discussion about 367731, there are some updated images with fixes to that problem at http://pilot.genomicscenter.nl/revis...86-respin/iso/.
What is interesting is that, in addition to the DVD iso, there is a set of 5 CD isos but no rescue CD. I haven't seen installation CDs for Fedora in a while. Are there notmally respins available with installation CDs for Fedora releases?
I have no DVD reader on the machine that I'm trying to upgrade from F7 to F8 so I've been trying to upgrade by booting the rescue CD and install from a DVD image on a Windows partition. When I install using this method, where is Anaconda loaded from, the rescue CD or the DVD image? Or, in other words, if I download the updated DVD image, will I be able to install it from the unupdated rescue CD I have?
BTW: I got the answer on the feature "0:15" issue on another thread. The live CD is for an 686 and I have a 586.
Thanks
Jim

I have a 586 rescue image the will work, http/ftp for sure works, need to test a hd install, if you care to try it, PM me and I'll give you an url to grab it from. It's my home system, I don't want an call from my isp... I'd be willing to share it with everybody if someone would host it.

Live CD
If you have no DVD reader, there are two Live CDs available, one for Gnome and one for KDE. Either one has an "install to hard disk" option.
Recommended procedure:
(1) Install Fedora from the Live CD.
(2) yum update. (This updates everything you have installed.)
(3) yum install everything else you want.

See above, those Live-cd won't run on a 586, I created a stripped down version that does.

I appreciate that but I decided to download the CDs and am in the process of installing now. Just inserted CD 2 of 5 - well past the "exited abnormally [1/1]" part.
Thanks

Hi, I seem to be having a similar problem, except that I am doing a fresh install... I tried the link for the fixed iso, but it 404'ed...
Specifically, my problem occurs just after the 'check media' bit (which goes through fine) and then it just stops with that exact error... Any one help?!?
I suppose I should mention that windows is already installed and working fine, and I haven't installed any form of linux on this machine before, as it only arrived today...
I'm trying to get a new laptop for my parents setup with linux instead of windows, but they need it sooner rather than later, so it's looking bad for spreading linux that little bit further - they're well up for it as well! DOH!
Cheers, Rohan
