Angry F7 Gnome Window List

Simple issue but can't seem to get it right:

I would like to have the tabs on the panel always appear the same size regardless of how many open windows there are and I'm quite happy to have them grouped when there are too many to fit on the panel.

What happens at the moment is that when there is just one tab it will invariably sprawl across half the width of the monitor and when more tabs are added, they'll gradually shrink until they group. Then of course the single tab that groups 7-odd windows again takes up most of the panel.

I have repeatedly specified minimum and maximum values in Window List preferences - to no avail. Those tabs seem to have a life of their own.

Am I overlooking something terribly obvious or do those tabs have a reputation for being unruly?

It's Gnome 2.18.3 on 2.6.23.1-21.fc7

I doubt you can do anything about this, if it bugs you that much then I would say just use the regular window list applet.

Thank you - I'll try that. I wasn't aware that there was an applet to handle the window list.
The good new is of course that apart from that everything else seems to work just fine at the moment...

Yup, the window list you're currently using, the one with the buttons, is also just an applet you can just delete it from your panel and use the old one if you like it better. Matter of fact everything on your panel is just an applet even the menu.

Ah, I read on the Gnome site that...

That's probably it - I'm still on 2.18...
