Fedora 8 issues

First one:

Date: If I attempt to change the date, the system crashes. NTP is not disabled, if I attempt to enable it, crash goes the system. If I simply adjust the time manually, system crashes.

Computer is a brand new Compaq Laptop with Phoenix Bios F.1C
I even adjusted the bios time first. UTC is enabled, but continually screws up the time.

KDE Mouse Pointer as root: If I log in to kde as root to do anything (just random system things... yes I know I can do sudo, and other options), root has no mouse pointer. If I login as my regular user, my mouse pointer is present.

Im open for suggestions on these. Scaring yourself by looking at the time and seeing it a day off is a bad thing.

Can 't help you on the time issue. Perhaps it is due to faulty hardware. But login is as root on graphical environment is considered poor security. I must admit that if it is a bug in Fedora 8 then I understand why no one detected it during testing.
