AWN notification area applet?

I installed avant-window-navigator and awn-extras-applets from the Fedora development repo. Mostly I'm very pleased. However, the notification area applet doesn't seem to function correctly.

I'm using leigh's fusion-icon as part of my session to run compiz fusion. AWN is added the same way. The notification area is always empty. Azureus minimized to tray is not showing up, neither is pidgin, no bluetooth icon, no compiz-fusion-icon. The area it self appears as either a gray square with nothing in it, or as a thin gray bar.

If anyone has gotten this applet to work right, or has any suggestions, I would appreciate some help.
