Talking Fedora 8... Xfce doesn't work :(

Hi ! I tried to install XFCE by pirut and yumex, but I had the same problem:

-The xfce startup screen flashes..
-Black background..
-I can't add the xfce menu.

I tried to delete the configuration files (./config/xfce...) but nothing changed.... Always the same problem.....

Any ideas?

kernel 2.6.23.1-49.fc8
Ati drivers--------> OPEN SOURCE
Java----------> Icedtea
the only restricted are: flash (gnash used all my cpu...) and gstreamer codecs. So the system is "GENUINE"

With gnome it's all ok... compiz works etc..

help!!

I would try two things. First, create a new user, just as an experiment, and see if Xfce works under that. Also, try logging into Gnome and selecting the compiz fusion icon and window manager. See if you have the Xfwm4 manager and try changing to that then logging back into Xfce.

It sounds like a wm problem to me, I had similiar issues late in FC6 till Xfce 4 came out. Then everything cleared up for me. As a footnote, I have been running Xfce since late FC6 and with Compiz-Fusion since mid F7 and I love it. Everything works great. I can log into gnome with the same user and back to Xfce with no problems but I have learned through experience it is best to keep just one DE per user. Create a new user account for each DE/WM you want to run.

oh, are you using Leigh's compiz-fusion package or the stock F8 compiz package? If the later I sense your problem lies here. Try switching window managers and I bet Xfce works fine.

For the black background and the missing right click drop down xfce menu try xfce menu / settings / desktop settings

and check the box " allow xfce to manage the desktop"

it you would also like a better wallpaper check the box "show image"

I missed writing that I've already tried to create a new user... same problem....

I don't use compiz ... I hate desktop effects I want xfce because I love the fast GUI.

(I know that compiz works, because this is not the first time I install Fedora 8 in my pc... )

@ leigh123@linux
I can't do it, because adding xfce menu, doesn't works! It disappear after adding..... it's incredible....

select desktop then check the box " allow xfce to manage the desktop"

if you would also like a better wallpaper check the box "show image"

CHECK in user_dir
.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/gtk.xml

Make sure any IconThemeName does not have value="Default"
If IconThemeName has value="Default"
change it to value="Rodent"

I think that is what happened to me and how I fixed it ... I think

In /home/carlo/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings shouldn't there be a file called gtk.xml that looks something like this?
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE mcs-option SYSTEM "mcs-option.dtd">

<mcs-option>
        <option name="Gtk/CanChangeAccels" type="int" value="0"/>
        <option name="Gtk/CursorThemeName" type="string" value="default"/>
        <option name="Gtk/CursorThemeSize" type="int" value="21"/>
        <option name="Gtk/FontName" type="string" value="Sans 9"/>
        <option name="Gtk/KeyThemeName" type="string" value="Default"/>
        <option name="Gtk/ToolbarStyle" type="string" value="icons"/>
        <option name="Net/CursorBlink" type="int" value="1"/>
        <option name="Net/CursorBlinkTime" type="int" value="500"/>
        <option name="Net/DndDragThreshold" type="int" value="8"/>
        <option name="Net/DoubleClickTime" type="int" value="300"/>
        <option name="Net/IconThemeName" type="string" value="Rodent"/>
        <option name="Net/ThemeName" type="string" value="Bluecurve"/>
        <option name="Xft/Antialias" type="int" value="1"/>
        <option name="Xft/HintStyle" type="string" value="hintmedium"/>
        <option name="Xft/Hinting" type="int" value="1"/>
        <option name="Xft/RGBA" type="string" value="none"/>
</mcs-option>
Am I seeing things? Did something go wrong with the install?

Cannot safely remove gnome stuff. It will take out everything including XFCE. I don't know why.

I can't find the perfect theme.
Oh well.

I installed
yum install gtk-xfce-engine

and some more themes appeared.

I like theme xfce-4.2
It is similar to Bluecurve, but slightly gentler.
