Question udev rules in Fedora 8

I am just going through my Fedora 8 install and doing my usual tweaks.

On opening /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules I have noticed that there is now a line at the top saying
"do not edit this file, it will be overwritten on update"

I have always edited this file to correct problems with permissions, so that I do not need to be root to sync my palm pilot, but this line has appeared.

What is the correct way to customize udev rules?

Thanks Phil

Afaik it has always got overwritten (mine has), they've just added a note about it. Old one gets saved as [rulename].rpmsave that you need to merge with updated one.

even better, write your own *.rules file. Give it a high number (mine is 20-custom.rules, for instance): it won't be overwritten and it is parsed before the standard rules (they are 50th).

Thanks for the advise guys, the 20-custom.rules works a treat.
