Exclamation Filesystem error

Hi,

I just installed Fedora 8, when I was using Fedora 7 I used to get this error, mainly when reset the computer (reset meaning press the physical reset button, which I haven't done many times)

Fedora's starting would break because of some filesystem related error, and it would ask me to run fsck manually. When doing it many errors appear, all of which I pressed "y".

The main error that would occur a lot of times is as follows:
Quote:
error reading block xxxx (attempt to read block form filesystem resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan. Ignore error?

y

Force rewrite?

y

After that I just pressed y many times and let it say yes to every message that followed, since they were many. At the end it said something like "Filesystem rebuilt" and "reboot linux".

When I reboot everything works again.

Now I installed Fedora 8 and copied all of my backup to the HD it happened again.

What could be causing this error?

Thanks

Get a new hard drive. The one you have has serious bad sector problems causing those errors. Drives do go bad and what you are seeing is a serious problem with the media of your hard drive not being able to properly read and write certain sections. With one hard drive, I did block out a section of the drive as not be be used again and that solved such a problem but I ended up telling the drive that 20GB was not there but that was a "Windows" drive.
