Madwifi/Atheros Hopefully you dont need this
|
Does this mean if I need madwifi/atheros, it should work out the box? If my system not connected to a wired internet/lan how can I get it to work?
Thnx.

Hello ghostdawg f8 appears to be using the new experimental madwifi driver without the dependancy on hal,(no need to reinstall with kernel upgrade)
so eventually madwifi should work out of the box, it may already do so on some atheros chipsets, but for me it doesnt, thats why i included it in my script, if anyone else reading this has had any success with the new driver in f8 id love to hear about it and what chipset etc.

I've 'stuck' this Guide since it's bound to be used by many, many members. Great work. Perhaps we can persuade you to add to it for future releases?

Bobthanks for your comments etc much appreciated, i will be making scripts for future releases, and if wanted will keep them here for others as well, although i will stop maintaining F7 when F9 draws nearer.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't installed it yet but will this coming weekend and let you know if it works for me.
Another question. If I need to manually install the madwifi drivers, can I add the gcc kernel-devel-$(mykernel) to a thumbdrive and install them? This machine is not connected to the internet except through wireless. Or can I add the gcc & kernel-devel during installation?
I went to your website and very nice except that blue on black is kinda hard on us older people eyes. Hard to read it. Keep up the good work with your documentions.
Thnx.

Hello ghostdawg you are lucky in that you dont need to download gcc kernel devel, just put your install media in the drive and go to add remove software, it will throw a box at you because you are not online, in that box you have a choice of quit or repository manager, pick repository manager and uncheck all except the top one installmedia. then just close and exit package manager. now you will be able to install gcc in yum

you will still need to download the madwifi driver though and dont forget to renable the repos you unchecked earlier when you are finished, one more thing if you update the kernel the driver will need reinstalling.
i used madwifi-0.9.3.2 for f8 as madwifi-0.9.3.3 i found unreliable for f8

Did you use the current kernel-devel with the older madwifi driver? I guess a newer kernel-devel will work with older driver than the newer driver working with older kernel-devel. I had tha problem trying to get madwifi for f7, which I'm going to replace with f8 now.
Thnx.

Im not sure exactly what your are saying but , i found the newer driver (.3)unreliable in f8 on all kernels so far if thats what you mean.

When I was using f7, I never upgraded the kernel, so when time came to try and get madwifi drivers, it kept saying I needed newer kernel headers or something similar to match the wifi drivers I guess. I couldn't find the older wifi drivers.
At this moment I'm installing f8 on my other machine which has f7, I'm not sure if this work okay but I'm doing an upgrade first to see if things go good.
Thnx.

After choosing the dvd as only respository, and running the yum install gcc kernel-devel commands, I get message showing:
No gcc package available and No kernel-devel package available.
What could be wrong?
I thought maybe I already had gcc & kernel-devel installed and tried running the make command, but getting errors about /lib/modules/2.6.23.1-42/build is missing. Please set KERNEL PATH.
If the kernel is not in /usr/src, then where is it?
Any more ideas?
Thnx.
*****UPDATE*****
I finally got gcc & kernel-devel installed, for some reason it didn't work from the command line but did work using Add/Remove Software program.
I ran the make; make install commands and now when I run modprobe ath_pci i'm getting an error about not finding it in /lib/modules/2.6.etc/net but I do see ath_pci.ko there.
