nm-applet refuses to start

After upgrading to Fedora 8, I'm trying to get NetworkManager working. Both NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatcher services start OK, but if I try to run nm-applet I get:

** (nm-applet:19621): WARNING **: <WARN>  applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken.  Return: 3

(nm-applet:19621): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nm-applet:19621): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

followed by a brief flash of a new icon in the system tray which then vanishes again.

Any ideas what the problem is here?

Double check to make sure both the NM services are running. Make sure there is an "notification are" in your top panel, reboot the computer....

Both NM services were definately running. Restarting both of them didn't help the situation. I also tried rebooting but with no success.

Since my Fedora 8 is an upgrade from Fedora 7 and not a fresh install, I figured this was some conflict with previous settings. I therefore stopped the "network" service and prevented it from restarting during boot and then used system-config-network and unchecked "Activate device when computer starts" for all network adapters.

After rebooting the nm-applet appears in the system tray and I'm able to connect to my wireless network.

I have a fresh install of F8 on the laptop I'm using at the moment. I'm having basically the same errors trying to get knetworkmanger/networkmanager ...

Here's the perminent fix:

Open the following menu:

System->Administration->Services

You'll be asked to enter the root password. Then you'll get the Service Configuration utility. In the Background Services tab, Click on the boxes next to NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatcher. Then File->Save Changes

That should do it.
