fc8 woes

Hey all!

Ok so i did a fresh install of FC8 this morning and updated (yum) all that was available, followed the FAQ put together by Axel (thanks bro!)

So problems thus far.

Is anyone else noticing FC8 chews up a ton more RAM? in FC7 i was generally at 700 of 2Gig, now im doubling that! (1.4gig of 2gig)

Wireless troubles with the bcm43xx, no matter what i do, it can't find the module? worked flawlessly in FC7

no video playback, doesn't matter what video player i use (i prefer VLC) audi works, no video at all.... I had this problem as well in FC7 but seems to have only started with the new fglrx module..

keyboard (Microsoft multimedia) shortcuts wont work, in FC7 i went to control center, and selected the MS keyboard and the volume etc worked, i did the same here but nada

has anyone come across any of these problems and have solutions any help is appreciated

ok I got the ndiswrapper working for FC8 and my air force one 4318.

Compiz Fusion problems, I forgot the fix for this (i tured the emerald --replace as well as compiz --replace)
But when I launch fusion-icon, i lose all my borders and have to reselect KDE as my window manager to get anywhere.. using 0.6.99 package btw

bluetooth works great, RAm is still being eaten alive... i've shutdown and stopped all the services I don't need/want running....

I fear the problem is the 2.6.23 family of kernels.
I tried updating to both kernels released for my system, F7 & ATI video, and both sent my resource usage through the roof.
CPU went from 2-3% while browsing to 30-40%, RAM usage was increased dramatically too.

So I'm sitting back with 2.6.22.9-91kernel & 8.40 vid drivers, F8 burnt to disc, waiting until they release a kernel package that's not so Windowsish.

A friend of mine is running SUSE10.3.
When I asked about it here's what he said.....

in suse im using kernel 2.6.22.12-0.1 with the 8.42 ati drivers i don't get the compiz stuff to work which is a known issue with them drivers and every now and then when java is on websites i get some tearing but i just restart X and all is fine again lol for awhile

So as you can see, OpenSUSE is just getting into the 2.6.22 kernel family.
He runs the same SuperKaramba applet as myself and says there is no rampant resource hogging.

I guess this the price for being on the bleeding-edge of Linux.

Well, I did a little tinkering and found the problem is the ATI 8.42 video drivers, not the kernel.

First image is with 2.6.22.9-91 kernel with ATI 8.40 driver,
Then 2.6.23.1-21 kernel with ATI 8.42 driver.
Then 2.6.23.1-21 kernel running "vesa" driver.

It is quite obvious that ATI 8.42 is the culprit.

All snaps taken a cpl minutes after booting, without running anything, at idle.

It depends on when you measure it. Linux caches and buffers
a lot so the longer you run since the last boot the larger the ram usage gets.
But it doesn't matter because if you then run an application
and need the ram it immediately frees some of the cache and
buffer for it.

i had so much trouble with ATI drivers that I changed to an nVidia graphics card .... my problems are now history

I wish ati would step up with some drivers...

I guess I mean amd now huh hehe
