Update Manager Fails to work for kernel 2.6.21-2944.fc8xen

For reasons I won't elaborate upon here, I downloaded the 2.9 GB file of
Fedora 8 Test 3 i386 and installed it on my system. This cleared up a
huge intractable problem with my screen resolution being pitifully
small.

Upon completing the install I was automatically informed that there were
317 update available for installation. I proceeded to try and view the
update that were available. Immediately I received this exception
message as shown in the screen shot below.

I also saved the out put of the crash report and have included it
below.
I have rebooted several time and have tried to access the package
manager for update and I get the same response each time.

I am thinking this might be useful data for the Fedora Core 8 People but
I would also like to know if there is a fix for it that I can apply so I
can update and add more software like I would like to do.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Sincerely,
ParticleBeam

Open a terminal Applications/System Tools/Terminal
and change to root
su - enter - password
Code:
system-config-services
and turn off yum-updatesd at the bottom.
then instead of using pup
Code:
yum -y update
if you get an error about a pid file
Code:
rm /var/run/yum.pid
then repeat the yum update.
See if that works or not.

Thanks so much it was working just fine as you suggested and then I tried to manually grab the output from the screen and save that as a text file for future reference. (I'm new to linux and and trying to learn as much as I can.
If you scroll to the bottom of the screen you will see where it apparently just stop as a result of me trying to capture the screen text.
Can you please advise me how to restart this process. I have left the exact same terminal open and will wait for a response before I close it.
Please keep in mind I am very new and need explicit command instructions.

Thanks Again So Much,
ParticleBeam

I waited for many hours to see if anyone would have the time to read my post about breaking my update above.

I thought it probably wouldn't hurt to just repeat the yum command for updating thinking it would be smart enough to know what it had already done and would then find the right place to resume the task and take off where it left before I inadvertently interrupted it.

So I tried to issue the command again but as you can see from the screen results below that won't work at all.
YUM seems broken now.
Can anyone tell me the command to fix this or to begin where I left off above.

Thanks so much for your help,
ParticleBeam

sometimes as root this will help,
Code:
yum clean all
Code:
 yum -y update
Code:
gedit /etc/yum.conf
and change the "keep cache=0" to "keep cache=1" Do this first
and the updates will be stored in /var/cache/yum/Fedora/packages/
untill you run yum clean all again.

Thanks for your help I did what you suggest works sometimes. My results are below.

I interpreted your remarks to mean that I should alter the yum.conf setting before I executed the yum -y update command. Is that in fact what you intended to convey?

Can you suggest anything further to try and remedy this impasse?

Thanks for all your help,

ParticleBeam

Yes that is what I meant.
Make sure your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo looks like this you can copy paste if not. Sometimes repos go down and come back up later for what ever reasons. Let us know if you get results or not.
Code:
[fedora]

Thanks. I went ahead and copied and pasted from the screen and saved it in fedora.repo as you suggested and then ran the commands. You can view the screen results below.

It still doesn't work. The fact that my present configuration of my system need so many update to make things work and the only way to update it is broken is a real bummer.
If you can suggest anything short of a complete reinstall I will follow it to the letter.

Thanks for all your help,
ParticleBeam

First try this as root-
Code:
# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
Code:
# rpmdb -vv --rebuilddb
and retry the update. If still problems try this.
Go here http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/b...?buildID=22833
and download the release noarch.rpm by RPMs
and install it.
cd into the folder you download the file to and as root
Code:
rpm -Uvh fedora*.rpm --force
Then have another go at it. Good luck.
