Trying to create a Boot Disk from Windows

I seem to be missing something basic about installing Fedora 7.

I thought the easiest thing to do would be to download the whole DVD .iso file and create a bootable DVD disk, as then I would have everything in one place.

I downloaded the file and checked the checksum, but I can't seem to turn it into a bootable DVD.

The recommended ISO recorder at
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm
on page
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/readme...n-burning.html

says that it does not support DVD burning.

So I tried using Nero versions 6 and 8. I tried following their user guide for creating a bootable DVD, but again seem to be missing something critical. I select the downloaded .iso file to use as an image file but have a number of problems. When creating a new compilation, Nero expects original a .IMA file by default. I changed it to look for all files, so I could select the .iso file, but I suspect that is the wrong thing to do. I proceeded anyway, and hit "New".

I tried two different things from there. On the first try, I tried to drag the .iso file to the compilation area, but it gave an error, saying that files over 2GB have to use the UDF file system. I dont remember now, but somehow I managed to drag the file (by changing some options somewhere which I dont recall), and burnt it. But the PC would not boot from that disk.

The second option was to not drag a file, because Nero was showing 2700MB "used" at the bottom, even with no files dragged into the compilation area (this was with a new blank DVD), so I burned that anyway, and it seemed to burn 2.7GB of data, but needless to say, Fedora would not boot from that either.

So then I decided to switch to the CD version of Fedora. But here's where I got really confused.

The only .iso file I managed to find for a Pentium PC was the rescuecd.iso which I did successfully manage to burn as a bootable CD with ISO Recorder. But once the Fedora installer starts, and asks the basic questions about language and keyboard etc, it asks for the location of the Fedora package, and upon telling it the local CD, it popped the CD out and said the packages weren't there. I tried to use HTTP instead, but it doesn't seem to recognise my network yet.

So then I tried to find the multiple CD .iso's referred to at
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/readme...wnloading.html

but I can't find them anywhere. Not only that, but the general directory structure on all the mirrors I looked at is not exactly the same as it says on the above page, eg it says the structure is

fedora/linux/releases/7/<arc>/iso/F-7-x86_64-DVD.iso

whereas on a mirror I was on, after the fedora/linux/releases/7/ it gives 3 directories of
/Everything
/Live
/Fedora

I've tried looking through all of them for the multiple CD .iso's but can't seem to find them.

Therefore, please could some explain to me either of both:

a) How to properly create a bootable DVD disk from the DVD .iso on either Windows XP or Server 2003 (I have the .iso on both now)?

b) Where to download the live CD's, and whether just the first, or all of them need to be "bootable" and/or if the 2nd and subsequent disks need to be created in a different way.

Wrong part of the guide, you need the instructions for burning a disk image. Choose "disk image or saved project", not "data DVD".

To burn with Nero6 Express, see here: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/readme...nero-express-6

LiveCD images are at the same place as DVD images: http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora.html
There are no "subsequent disks", LiveCD is a single bootable disk image.

Thanks, that solved it.

My problem was that originally I was using Nero 8 on W2003, (Nero 6 was no longer on their website) and its interface was different (and not at all obvious) to that described for Nero 6 in the Fedora docs. I only looked at an install of Nero 6 on an XP system some time later, after which I had forgotten it was specifically Nero Express rather than Nero ROM Burner I should be using - even though Nero ROM burner has the option described above for specifically creating bootable DVD's.

A case of looking at the same documentation for too long.

However, as an interesting aside, had I wanted to use a Live CD instead, it still isn't obvious where to find it. The link in below is to the root only of the mirror, not the actual location. The only CD .iso I could find for i386 was the rescue disk, and even though it booted, it wouldn't let me do a new, full install of Fedora.

Not urgent as I am going now with the DVD, but if you or anyone else is able to post the exact link to the live CD for downloading, it would be appreciated.

Thx for that. I saw that directory, but the names of the files there are:

Fedora-7-KDE-Live-i686.iso
Fedora-7-Live-i686.iso

It is the i686 that fooled me, sounded like a different architecture. Do you know what the i686 means?

Thx again.

It means that you need at least a Pentium Pro to run the LiveCDs.
