Intel 8256GT: no link detected

Hello,

the network card of my new laptop refuses to work: It is plugged in a switch, the diode indicates that the link is up (and it is even blinking, so that it seems some traffic), but "ethtool eth0" says that "Link detected: no".

The network card is Intel 8256GT 10/100 and the module e1000 is loaded, everything on a newly installed Fedora Core 7 (32bit) on a brand new laptop HP Compaq 6720s. Of course, I double checked that the cable is OK and when another computer is plugged in instead of the laptop, the network runs fine.

Any tips what to try? Maybe the hardware is malfunctioning?
