How do I temporarily disable wireless connection

I'd like to temporarily disable my wireless network connection, but when I click on the NetworkManager icon on my desktop, and click the radio button next to the access point I'm currently connected to, it disconnects, and immediately reconnects again. How do I disconnect, just for awhile?

If you "right click" the NM icon and highlight "enable wireless" you can disable your wireless...

I don't know about NM because I don't use it, but you can try in a terminal:

ifconfig interface down

Replace the interface with the right name of course
