Exclamation Fedora 8 Font installation

I'm currently on fedora 8 and I tried to download ttf fonts to use for Linux, and I'm not sure if there is a font folder that you drag and drop the fonts into like in windows, or if theres another way to do it. I'm new to Linux so i might not know the lingo, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:
You can install the font package following the instructions from here: Install Microsoft Truetype Fonts

Fedora 8 has not been released yet. What you're using is a test version, released for testers to try out and report bugs for the planned rollout on November 8th. The community thanks you for your efforts in debugging our favourite distro The actual current stable release is Fedora 7. If you're new to Linux, I'd suggest you use that.

There's an RPM of TT Fonts here:

http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...ra-f7.html#ttf

You can drop other TT Fonts into its folder under /usr/share/fonts/ (as root) and run the command:

fc-cache -v -f

Hi Dark Archon.

In Gnome: In your home folder: View> Show hidden Files. check this box, then Look for the .fonts folder. If it doesn't exist, create it.

Drag your fonts into this folder. Log out, log back in, and your ttf fonts should be available to use.

Follow his (Wayne's) advice. Mine was just an alternative.

His installs system wide. Mine only installs for that user.

Sorry to confuse. Should have kept my happy trap shut the first time.

Dunno! You could always just try it and see what happens! It ain't exactly rocket science! <....>

Just follow Wayne's advice. He hasn't borked more than, oh, say, 200 or so poor unsuspecting innocent victim's systems!

All kidding aside, it should work just fine.

Dan

P.S.

1) Never run as root.

2) If you search the forum using "True Type fonts" as search terms, you might turn up a better idea!

Kind of is. Once F8 is in final release, there will likely be a dialog for installing fonts. However, this is a testing release. Some items and controls may not be installed yet.

Yeah, Mandrake/Mandriva has had a font install tool for as long as I can remember You'd think that other distros would have included one by now. not that I want to go back to Mandriva

OK. I'm about to break my rule number two. Rule number one is I don't help people who run as root.

Open a Terminal (Command Line) and type:

su -

Yep, that's su space dash, then give the root password. Then type:

nautilus

This will open a File Browser with root privileges. Navigate the 'File System' to '/usr/share/fonts' Here you can create a new folder if you want (ttfonts, myfonts, sillyfonts, ellifonts, whatever)

Select the fonts you want to add and holding down the 'middle' mouse button, drag 'em into your new folder, remove finger from button and choose 'Move' from the menu.

Close Nautilus and then type:

fc-cache -v -f

When it's done log-out and log back in. All done. This is assuming you use Gnome.

Edit: Of course, it would have been quicker to do it all from a Terminal without invoking Nautilus, but some people want to do it the GUI way

i like fedora. but the beta has allllllot of bugs and glitches. my wireless card had to have a bunch of stuff done to get it to work. i was looking at youtube videos and i saw some guy who had ubuntu or w/e and he was doing all this cool visual effects. can fedora do those?
he also had a bar at the center top of his desktop with some icons.
