Fedora 7 Live CD can't boot.
I downloaded the 32 bit ISO and used the Gnome File manager to burn a CD. Checking, it has the files, not just the .iso, so it burned right. However, when I try to boot, it reports that the boot failed.
Somebody on UseNet suggested that I do the following:
dd bs=2k if=/dev/cdrom | cmp - image.iso
Results:
dd: reading `/dev/cdrom': Input/output error
305656+0 records in
305656+0 records out
625983488 bytes (626 MB) copied, 149.182 seconds, 4.2 MB/s
cmp: EOF on
Windows 98 says that the 89 minute,700 MB disc has has 698 MB, and df -k agrees. The faq says that I need an 80 minute CD. Anybody know what went wrong?

Not a useful answer. First, I've had bad experience with Nero creating coasters by burning ISOs as one, big file instead of expanding it. Second, I don't have k3b, don't know what it is and see no reason to get it. I've had good luck in the past (Including burning the FC 6 CDs) with Gnome's built in burner so I know it works.

Thats cause you didn't burn the iso properly in nero. Try the following.
1. Kill the New Compilation window that shows up.
2. Click "Recorder"
3. Click "Burn Image"
4. Select your ISO file from the folder where you saved it.
5. Just make sure that Finalize Disc (No further writing possible) is checked.
6. Click on Burn.
Never had a burn fail on me using Nero.

Telling me how to use a Windows program to burn a Linux CD under Linux is rather missing the point, don't you think? I've tried again using Gnome's built-in software and had the same result. Can anybody tell me why I'm having trouble burning this CD UNDER LINUX?

There are two LINUX programs that will handle this for you; "k3b" (KDE-based) and "Gnomebaker" (Gnome-based). Under the "tools" options on either one you'll find "burn CD image" which should handle things for you. Personally, I burn at 12X and verify my results. Takes a bit longer, but I know my data's accurate.

So, what you're saying is the CD burning built into Gnome isn't adequate for this. Thanx! I'll try that and see what happens.

I Installed gnomeburner and tried it. I had a little trouble with it because the instructions in Help didn't match the program, but after a little fumdiddling around I got it to burn an iso into a CD. Alas, even though I took your advice and burned the 52x CD at 12x, testing found it to be only 698 Meg, and I had Yet Another Coaster. It's possible, of course, that the house-brand CDs I have just can't hold enough data, even though they claim to be ;700 MB CDs. *Sigh!*

Okay, there's a few Live CD links that have CD versions a bit below 700 meg. Try here: http://mirror.linux.duke.edu/pub/fed...s/7/Live/i386/

I downloaded it today and burned a CD. Checking it against the ISO with dd, it seemed OK, but failed the media check on boot and dropped me to a bash shell. *Sigh!* Maybe there's something Not Quite Right with my drive, and I'll need to have a friend burn a copy for me.
