Thumbs up Just wanted to say...

I couldn't figure where else to post this because it didn't seem to fit in any of the forii and so I am putting it here because this seems to be the most fitting forum in which to place it. So, if you don't like it here, please move it where it belongs. Anyway...

I'm new to Fedora (I've been using a month, tops) and being new I just wanted to say that I am really impressed by:
  • how easy Fedora is to install
  • how easy it is to maintain, update, and install new software
  • how well it performs
  • how good it looks
  • how easy it is to use
and there are probably other things, but those are the most important. I also want to say "Thank you" to the developers and the beta-testers and anyone else involved in making Fedora what it is. I left Windows for Xandros back in December (my wife got me the Home Edition Premium version for Christmas) and it took me a bit to get it up and running and get my wife to switch over to Xandros. I first installed Fedora about 1 month (maybe 5 weeks) ago and my wife has already switched over to Fedora and I just removed Xandros from my drive this weekend. I've been able to get Fedora to do everything we need it to do, it's easy to use, and it's a lot more fun to use than Xandros.

So, thank you again, everybody. Fedora rocks!

Clem

Welcome to the forum. There is a proper place for your post and that's in 'Fedora Focus' where I'm moving it now

Edit: We're also a nosey lot, so if you have time feel free to post a screenshot in the 'Gallery'. Glad things went smoothly for you.

It is not every day you get to see such success stories. Good to hear it all worked out well for you and your wife. Indeed Fedora is one nice distro, still my distro of choice

First, thanks for moving the post to where it belongs. Not sure how I missed the "Fedora Focus" forum. Went and had a look at where "Fedora Focus" was listed and I must have been quite tired to miss that. Second, thank you all for the warm welcome! I haven't got my signature set up yet, but I'll work on that soon, too. Third, screenshots, screenshots. Here's a couple:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1...enshot2un0.png
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8...enshot1xp2.png

As you can see, I've got the Desktop Effects turned on. I have to say that using the Desktop Effects is a lot simpler in Fedora than Xandros. In Xandros, I had to download "3d desktop switcher" and then it would break once in a while - requiring me to turn off desktop effects on all user ID's and then turn it back on on all user ID's (requiring a restart after turning it on or off for each user ID - so, for 2 user ID's, that's 4 restarts). I also wasn't sure how keen I'd be on the Gnome desktop, but after using it for only a week or 10 days, I decided I really didn't want to go back to the KDE desktop.

Finally, I could use a little help with my laptop. I posted the problem here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...467#post854467, but haven't received any replies, yet. Quick description of the problem is that Fedora does not recognize that the laptop is connected to AC power and it does not recognize that the laptop has a full battery. So, it concludes there is a "critical" power situation and shuts the computer down in 30 seconds or less after I log in - which, so far, has not been enough time for me to change the power management settings to prevent this.

Thanks and have a great day!

Edit: Had to edit the Imageshack links because the images were too small. New images were uploaded and new links provided.

Heh heh!

Nice job of sneaking in a cross thread post, there Clem! Ordinarily that'd get the knuckles cracked, but you did it so smooth, and put so much effort into it, I just can't bring myself to pop the thumb break on the old knuckle bustin' ruler.

Loved the wallpaper, by the way!

Sorry about the cross-thread post. Just so that I am clear (and can avoid it in the future), I'm guessing that would be the link to the other post?

Glad you liked the wallpaper. I have several that I grabbed from the various OS's I had installed on this computer for a while. I originally had this desktop booting: Xandros, Fedora, Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, Mandriva, SimplyMEPIS, PCLinuxOS, and Sabayon. I removed Debian and SimplyMEPIS because I couldn't get my wireless working on those. I removed Ubuntu because I decided it didn't offer me anything I didn't already have with either Xandros or Fedora. Mandriva and PCLOS were removed primarily because I simply didn't like them and also because they offered me nothing I didn't already have with Fedora or Xandros. Sabayon was removed becaues I didn't like the package management system and because it couldn't make use of either Debian or RPM packages (making getting new software more difficult than I was willing to deal with). Xandros is now gone because Fedora is better and because of the deal they made with Microsoft. Anyway, my original point in all this was that I have a bunch of wallpapers that I am willing to email you if you'd like to check them out. Some you may have because I'm not entirely clear which ones I got from Fedora, but the ones I know that I got from Fedora I will exclude.

Yeah. We try to keep it to one thread per issue. If we don't, we can get buried in the impatient in no time!

Although you've been plenty patient here. Bumping a thread isn't a good idea either, so I did it for you. <....>

myNewHat, Your reasons are the same reasons I use Fedora
I used Xandros 2.0 and 2.5 but found them to be a stable and good OS, but I also found it to be a little limiting in what you could do....
Welcome to the forum!

Strange, SimplyMepis was the first distro that setup my wireless without much work on my part

* how easy it is to maintain, update, and install new software
* how well it performs
* how good it looks
* how easy it is to use

Well, I think the main reason I had problems with my wireless in Debian and SimplyMEPIS is because I'm using a Linksys WMP54G v4.1 and that card's heart is a Broadcom chip. So, I end up having to use Linuxant Driverloader even to get it to work in Fedora, which cost 20$. However, I don't mind the price. Good software is worth paying for and Linuxant Driverloader works beautifully. They even have a wpa_supplicant plugin that they give away for free. So, later this week I'll have to have a look at getting my network re-encrypted since I've been operating it w/out encryption because Xandros couldn't deal with WPA encryption on my laptop (using an Intel WirelessPRO card). I figured using WEP encryption is virtually the same as no encryption. So, I just set up my Wireless MAC filter and life goes on. Otherwise, Debian and SimplyMEPIS found all my other hardware & properly configured it all.

Another thing I like about Fedora is the wide support from third-party software developers. I like that I can get nearly everything I want or need in RPM format. For example, my wife wanted to use Krecipes in Xandros, but I never could get all the dependencies worked out. In Fedora, it just installs and runs w/out a problem. I like some of the games a little better, too. My wife really likes njam and I've watched her play a couple times. It's pretty crazy. I've been enjoying supertuxkart.

My mother-in-law (50 years old) was out for 3 weeks in September. I rehabbed one of my old desktop PC's w/a 1ghz AMD Athlon, 768Mb sdram, and 60G hard drive and installed Fedora on that machine for her. She really liked the look and feel of Fedora and felt it was easier to use than Xandros or even Windows. When she said that, it just blew me away because she (literally) cannot program her own VCR and when she had a computer (running Windows) she was *always* calling with questions. I sent her home with Fedora, she is really happy and hasn't called with *any* questions yet! So, there is another big kudos to Fedora and the Fedora dev team.
