help with tar to tape

I am trying to backup to tape. I use the command

tar cvf -M --format=pax /dev/tape /mnt/serverdrive

I use the -M to be able to change tapes when full but I get this error:

tar: -M: Warning: Cannot close: No space left on device

please help
