Geriatric Shoemenders OR X Server

Some weeks ago I had problems with an out of range message which appeared to relate to the use of an Nvidia chipset on a Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 motherboard.

With some help from this forim I got a graphical interface working, and finally downloaded and installed a Linux x64 display driver.

All went well until I decided to get internet access and apply all the available updates for Fedora 7 yesterday.

I am now in trouble with a vengeance. All the tricks of editing the xorg.conf file to try to get it working again appear to fail. The previous version also shows the same problem.

I have tried to create a new xorg.conf, but without any joy at all. X Server does not seem to want to start, no doubt aided by my attempts to make it.

All thoughts and help, most appreciated.

Regards

Dave

If you applied all of the available updates you no doubt got the newest kernel. With the NVidia graphics chip that translates into a need for a video driver that is compatible with the new kernel.

You can try using the vesa driver for the time being so that you can get back to a graphical interface. You probably know that to do that all you need to do is to change the driver from nvidia to vesa and restart x.

Thanks Glennzo. Ahhhhhhhh! I understand. You will appreciate my feelings especially after I went to the trouble of downloading a Display Driver from the nvidia site.

I did try changing the driver name after I had generated a new xorg.conf using the X -configure command but in the haze of last night I don't think it worked.

I shall try it again tonight and report back here.

Regards

Dave, edit xorg.conf by hand to change the driver. I think it's much easier.

Hi Glennzo,

Yes it did work, and as I say I utilised the X - configure command to generate a "new" xorg.conf which I then copied over the original xorg.conf.

In practical terms, all of this would not appear to bode well for any future updates that I put on.

If these presumably cause a change in the Kernel can I assume that at some point whatever is built into the Kernel will catch up with what I have got ?

Cheers and thank you for your help

With a kernel update comes the need for updated NVidia drivers, usually kmod-nvidia. The Livna repo is your best bet for kmod-nvidia, as Livna seems to stay right on top of the kernel updates and releases an updated kmod within a day or two. I've learned to keep a few extra kernels around in case of trouble by way of the installonly_limit line in /etc/yum.conf.

installonly_limit=5
