Doom3

I am running a Mac Pro Quadcore with gig of ram and a Nvidia 6800gts pcie card but when running Doom 3 for alittle while, system locks up and have to do a hard reboot.

I think it may be a voltage issue with vcore. The reason I say that is on other system I had same problem but raising the vcore setting solved that issue on that particular system.

This is a new system with efi boot system which doesn't allow you to change anything like bios does.

Can anyone give me some feedback on 'anything'?

I don't think it is an overheating issue, as computation work at almost full load for days at a time doesn't lock system.

What do you think?

Edit: Guess I should have mentioned, it is the 64 bit version of Fedora 7.

Thanks, Kurt

It could be a number of issues, one could be a power supply issue (or lack of voltage on a particular rail) as you mentioned, another might be a problem with system configuration, and maybe you should try running Doom3 with the SMP binary instead (open the launcher script and replace the doom3.x86 binary with doom3-smp, making sure you have it first!).

Ohh, and 1GB of RAM seems a bit too small for a quad core CPU, and a LOT smaller for a 64-bit OS on a quad core! Consider installing the 32-bit version instead (seriously)

try updating your kmod-nvidia driver, the last driver gave me some nasty issues. Just type yum update and see if its got anything nvidia related.

Yes, i kinda was cheap on that but considering what Apple wants for an extra gig from them... I figure I can get it from newegg alot cheaper. (Just haven't got it done yet.) I will look into the SMP binary.
The reason I preferred the 64 bit version is so could make use of all processors, but will keep that suggestion in hat.

PS, after playing around some more , I don't feel it is a vcore issue any longer. Last night I think I got 'maybe' 60 seconds into game and it locked.

Thanks for help!

Do have latest drivers from Livna installed.

Here is a short run of glxgears:

[kka@localhost ~]$ glxgears
72013 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14402.438 FPS
72063 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14412.576 FPS
72022 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14404.299 FPS
72039 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14407.797 FPS
72042 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14408.205 FPS
72058 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14411.576 FPS
72057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14411.273 FPS
72056 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14411.068 FPS
72000 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14399.830 FPS
X connection to :0.1 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
[kka@localhost ~]$

It is about 4000fps faster than my single cpu box with XFX 6800 Ultra card.

Thanks for help everyone.

The 32-bit Fedora should support all your cores just fine

Have you tried different graphics settings? I mean, have you tried with more modest graphics? MAYBE you're running out of memory or some other condition? (blindly guessing here). It could also be a hardware issue (memory or the like?), do you dual boot with OSX? How's OSX? Is it the 64-bit version or 32-bit version? What about other memory hog apps under it? Has it even hinted at some hiccups? This is surely a strange thing, and given your setup and the application which is causing the problem, and arguably that no other application is causing such problems, the most likely culprit is the graphics driver (or the application itself). Doom3 requires a certain c++ runtime library, maybe it is conflicting with the system wide one? (again, blindly guessing)

Yes, tried different settings. Also tried oss, alsa , and best for sound. Was thinking it is locking at the exact time in game that I run across a ammo clip and then at the sound of picking up that clip, but not for sure. Did notice that sometimes, if I hit escape fast enough at a freeze, that I 'may' get back to main menu before system is froze solid.

MacOSX was the Tiger version, supporting 64 bit as far as I can tell.

No , don't dual boot. Just Fedora only. Wasn't impressed with OSX myself. It is still on a drive setting on floor, Ha. I removed the factory ATI card and bought an Nvidia. My linux preference

Yes, do have the occasional hiccup but nothing too much out of ordinary, has happened on other Fedora systems in past.

Been folding all morning at about 70 to 80% load mark and running fine. Hard drive is at 102 degrees.

I may give the 32 bit a try , as it is just a simple pull a lever , lift side panel out and slide one drive out and slide in the other. Apple makes good hardware but wish it had regular bios system.

Will try your other suggestions as I get them worked in , and again, thanks for suggestions.

What do you see with the alsa driver? What's your .doom3/base/DoomConfig.cfg sound driver set as (grep driver .doom3/base/DoomConfig.cfg)? You may force the use of ALSA from this file.

This was terminal output at a lock which holding down esc to exit game caused it to finally free up back to main menu. Any thought on it?

Could you provide a link for the smp binary? AFAIK there is no such binary and google didn't turn anything up -- also the official information doesnøt mention anything about an SMP enabled binary. Are you sure you aren't talking about quake 4?

You are right. I may be confusing Q4 (or any other Quake for that matter) on this one. I'm sure I thought there was a doom3smp.x86 binary, but apparently there is no such binary.

No, right out of box.

I tried the update link in game but says game is up to date.

What is strange is, I had no problem though several levels up to this one. I can start the game and go backwards though areas I traveled already but if I return to the same area and proceed across the walkway, then it locks , but replaying any lower completed levels , all is fine ... until the same map area that it freezes.

Maybe, zip file corrupted?? I am just guessing myself.
