How to stop X from launching?

Hi,

I'm installing MythDora and everything goes nice and smooth up to the point when it tries to set up MythTV. At that point, it freezes on me. I believe this is because it is trying to start X and doesn't have the correct nVidia driver. So I need somehow to stop it from starting X, get a console, install the driver, and then reboot. But the screen freezes and I can't type anything! So how do I get it to reboot but not try starting X? (e.g. how can I run linux level 1 in fedora?)

Also, when I had this problem in KnoppMyth the screen didn't freeze so I could toggle to a console. But at that point the internet was not active yet and so I had to run dhclient. What's the equivalent of dhclient under Fedora?

Thanks SO much!!
FRA

In /etc/inittab you can (as root) edit the line id:5:initdefault: to read id:3:initdefault: I don't think you want runlevel 1, here's the breakdown:

0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
1 - Single user mode
2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
3 - Full multiuser mode
4 - unused
5 - X11
6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

Hello fra

Welcome to the forum.

If you only want to control the boot up mode for that one session, you will see the opportunity at the grub boot menu to edit the boot up options by pressing the 'e' key a couple of times..

If you follow that through and add the number '3' without the quote marks, as listed by Lindy above, to the end of the line that begins 'kernel', the machine will then boot to a command prompt for that session only.

On mine for instance it looks like:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.22.5-71.fc7 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet 3

Ayup! That's how I do it. As a matter of fact, I have an extra GRUB entry set up that way just for diagnostics.
