fstab not mounting nfs shares

Hola companeros,

I am having some issues with getting fstab to mount nfs shares.

I am new to fedora and I have googled and searched the forums till my eyes nearly fell out. nothing the searches turn up have worked for me.

I installed the kde live cd and I was able to get pretty much everything I wanted installed an set the way I like.

except nfs in fstab.

I checked to be sure the nfs related files were installed and they all seem to be installed.

I can mount using the "mount command ie "# mount henry8:/mnt/hda3 /mnt/music"
and it mounts the share successfully.

but, when I add the share to fstab, it only brings up the share unmounted and gives the message: "permissions denied"

I realized that I already had mounted manually, so I unmounted and "mount -a"
it pops up again unmounted and I get "kde mediamanager not available" or somesuch.

based on advice from a search, I look in the kde control panel and I am told that "unable to contact kdd" or the like.

someone in one of the search results suggested a s link to an older lib. didn't work.

I realize these are vague references, but I am not at that machine right now and this was last night.

either way, I am wondering if I either have a bad install or there is something more to this.

any ideas?

I used to get that error message while trying to mount from fstab using nfs4. Using nfs worked. Here's the thread I opened about my issues with NFS

hola companero,

Yup, that was one of the ones that came up in my searches. I already use just nfs but it didn't work, I also tried any of the other versions, nfs4 and 3 etc..., none of that worked.

thanks for the try though.

bigbearomaha,

try mounting to something other than /mnt, i.e

Code:
mkdir /home/henry8-music
su -c "mount -t nfs henry8:/mnt/hda3 /home/henry8-music"
I found automount locked any other use of this directory.

hola companero,

I had first tried mounting to /music, off the root same effect. but perhaps it resists root also? who knows? I 'll try that in maybe the home like you suggest.

gracias,

Hola companero,
Nope. no matter where on the local filesystem I mount it to in fstab, it will always come up empty and unmounted.

and yet, by entering the mount manually at the C/L, it always works. just not in fstab.

qien sabes?

As far as I know, the only difference between your two methods of mounting an nfs share, is that on the command line you are letting mount assume default values, (file system, permissions, etc). You set these in /etc/fstab and then.

As the default options work (it sees the device as a nfs share), putting these options into /etc/fstab would work?

As for the kde mediamanager message in your first post, I wonder if HAL is overriding the line in /etc/fstab. This is how plugging in removable media works. If your nfs share "looks" like a music CD, then your problem may lie in how HAL operates...

Hola companero,

You are right.

In about 4 search results, I got about 4 different ways to mount specifically in fstab. none of them work.

However. I have a possible solution that may have more to do with the install rather than the fstab or HAL on their own.

So, before I go any further here. I am going to clear that drive and reinstall. At that point. right after a clean install and nothing more. I will try to mount nfs in fstab before I make any other changes.

I think te problem may be with a script I used to install multimedia files.

I will report here again to let you know the results of that.
