is there a program to do automatic updates?

I've read something about up2date but maybe that's old and not used? I don't know.. before saying use crontab or whatever with yum.. I would rather have something with a gui if possible

yes there is it is yumupdatesd. I believe you can install it with the command

Code:
yum install yumupdatesd
if it was not installed by default

If you want something done automatically, why would it need a user interface?

You do have yum-updatesd which automatically tells you that updates are available, but you still have to update manually.

yum update -y in the cron file is one way to fully automate the process, but I wouldn't do that!

output the results to a log file
yum update -y >> yum-update.log

If you haven't altered the pre-set services that Fedora configures you should see a process named yum-updatesd running. The GUI can be launched from /Applications/System Tools/Software Updater although you will find most people here rely on the very flexible command line options for YUM. Additionally, if the stock GUI app (PUP) doesn't float your boat, a little
Code:
yum install yumex
will give you a very nice GUI for managing installed software and updates. I would also highly recommend
Code:
 yum install yum-fastestmirror
very useful plug-in.

I'm sure someone has more to add as I am a relative Fedora newb, but I hope that helps.

I guess I put it the wrong way :X I just want something to tell me there is updates.. sorry it's 4:26am and I'm kinda tired I guess I have that yumupdatesd and it's enabled in services but it never does anything? :X or maybe it does but I don't know about it since I never check those places I don't know.. it said it would notify me by mail, dbus or syslog... is there something that can just have a popup window down below to the right with all the other little icons?

Try
$man yum-updatesd.conf

There is a configuration file for yum-updatesd and it may hold the answers you are looking for.
I don't use it myself, so I can't give an answer but I think this may be in the right direction..

You should see an updates available icon in the Gnome Notificaion area of the toolbar, how old is your install? If it's fairly fresh, like less than 2 days, I don't think there have been many updates so you likely aren't missing anything.

If you are paranoid starting the service from the applications menu will check or a little
Code:
yum update
will force a quick check.

I know KDE has a notification applet as well, but a KDE user will have to point it out as I haven't used it in quite a while. Good luck.

su
yum install kyum

I have yumex with I rarely use I don't need a gui for yum itself.. just something to inform me of an update.. I remember when installing fedora core 6 or whatever it was when I did have gnome on there to start with :X it had something like that.. a popup would just appear and say you have updates.. I think anyways

ps. you can keep your gnome (sticks tongue out)

pup is definetely what you are looking for... if yumupdatesd is running, "pup" should pop up when there are updates available. Try opening a console and typing

Code:
pup
