External Hardware Modem

Hello.

I've been trying to get fedora 7 up and running and I've run into some trouble getting my usb modem to work. I grabbed gnome-ppp from rpm search (which I'm pretty sure just gave me a link to the package in the main repos) and after I entered my information and pointed to the right device it tells me it can't open the modem. Running wvdial from the terminal tells me the device is busy and that the default dialer section of wvdial.conf is missing.

Here's what I've got so far:
-I didn't think my problem was the wvdial config file, but I set it up from scratch using this tutorial and it still tells me default dialer section is missing.
-Just to be sure I created a link to my device which is /dev/ttyUSB0 at /dev/modem and pointed to that in case something was being picky.
-I can can make it pick up the line using the "modem lights" applet.

If anyone can help me out, you have my thanks.

There are lots of modem posts here. The problem with most modems is that they are "winmodems" ,that means the modems are not really modems but some emulated (software) hardware which the manufacturer usually produces it for windows only. This emulation is in fact very stupid. Usb modems are one type of winmodems. If you know the modems manufacturer you can try to find drivers at their web site, or you can search it on www.linmodems.org . I believe that if you read the modems specifications you will find that it requires a PC with a minimum amount of memory and a minimal processor frequency. This characteristic is specific to winmodems. Real modems require only a port for connecting.

I know it's not a win-modem since I'm using it in PCLOS right now. That in combination with the fact that I've also gotten it working in Ububtu, Sabyon, etc and that I can at least get it to pick up the line makes me think it's covered in the kernel. It should just be a matter of configuring it. It's an actiontech usb/serial btw, sorry that I left that out.

then you don't have the right port setup or you don't have the drivers for the USB to serial converter.

I see ttyUSB0 in /dev, not ACM0 or anything else that looks like my modem and considering that's where it's always been I'm inclined to think that's it. This modem has rarely been detected, but almost always works when I point directly to it.

I don't need a converter, it has both ports on the modem itself.

then use it on serial. And you do have a converter, only that is embedded in the modem itself.

Good luck.

I don't have a serial port, but it doesn't matter since I've got it working under the network manager now. I thought I had checked to see if it was working after rebooting, but I guess I must not have. Stupid me. Anyway, this will hold me over till I get wvdial running and I'm sorry for the trouble.
