2 connections, 1 NIC

is it possible to maintain 2 different connections for 1 Network card that i have.

let me be more clear,
i have 1 NIC on my system, and 2 different ethernet cable connections.
each of those connections require my card to be configured to different ip addresses.
so, instead of having to type in the addresses manually every time i use a different cable, is there an easier approach??

if i can know which is the configuration file which stores this ip info, maybe i can maintain 2 copies of it and use the appropriate file whenever necessary. will that work?

also, is there any way to identify which of the 2 cables is plugged in and choose the appropriate configuratiion file.

sorry for the long post...
thanks in advance.
