Voodoo3 3000 & Fedora 7
I've installed Fedora 7 on my pretty old PC which is running a Voodoo3 3000 video card. I have the following problems that I'd greatly appreciate some help with:
1. Graphics seem to run slow (slower than you'd expect even for this old card) for games - how can I make sure the Voodoo3 3000 is correctly installed?
2. If I run 'desktop-effects' from the command line, and click 'Enable Desktop Effects' I get the following output:

4. I don't know if this is important or not, but the nice little 'Display' applet under 'System/Administration' has disappeared.
(EDIT: Okay, so all I need to do here is install 'system-config-display'. Checked out my other FC6 machine.)
Can someone help me out - I am a total newbie and I'm trying sooooo hard to convert from Windows!
Bonus Question:
Any good suggestions for a Linux compatible video card, inexpensive, not cutting edge (I'm not a heavy gamer, but I'd like some performance)

I know nothing about these cards, but check the "Glide3" and "Glide3-libGL" packages (see my screenshot) It appears your voodoo card needs these for integrating the 3D effects.
Bonus question: I do know  Get the best nVidia card you can find. Bonus answer, be sure to get one in the 6000 series or better as anything older requires the legacy driver. I am still pleased as punch with my 7800GT and the price should be pretty low by now.

#4: Right, so I've installed 'system-config-display'. That's fixed then.
#1: Using this GUI I can also see that the system is using the 'tdfx' for Voodoo 3,4,5 etc cards, so at least its using the right driver, right? But I'm still not sure its running right.

Did you enable direct rendering?
Your /etc/X11/xorg.conf should have a line saying
Load "dri"
in the "Module" section. It should also have this:

I believe that will have to be "dri", not "DRI", in the Module section. You may (or may not) need a Load "glx" line in there, too.
Also make sure that your Device section has this:

Run /sbin/lsmod and see if the tdfx module is loaded. If not, then you'll have to modprobe tdfx.
You'll need to restart X to see if the change worked.

Looks like you have to set the DefaultDepth to 16-bit color and can't use a resolution above 1024x768.

The Voodoo3 AFAIK could only run 3D in 16-bits color depth, 32-bit color for 3D rendering was only made possible until the Voodoo 5. In any case, the 16-bits of the Voodoo3 are more like a 22-bit color depth than real 16-bits, They're 22-bits compressed into 16-bits (can't remember the whole rationale and technicalities of how 3dfx managed to achieve that, but that was the explanation of their superior IQ in 16-bits color depth, anyway). Try changing the default mode from 24 to 16-bits and see if that does it. I'd test with my Voodoo 3 3000, but it so happens to be on my mom's PC and that's off limits territory as far as IT goes with me and her

The resolution restriction was only true for the Voodoo 2 cards. Banshee, Voodoo3, and Voodoo5 cards with the 2D core built into the main GPU chip could go as high as the half of the on board RAM would allow them to go for the frame buffer. With the meager 12Mb on the Voodoo 2s it was mostly reserved for texture memory. The Banshee architecture changed that radically. However 3D acceleration would only be "possible" at certain resolutions. Anything beyond 1024 with a Banshee was barely "playable", but I remember playing Unreal 1 with my Voodoo 3 in Glide in 1280x1024 just fine (my monitor wouldn't allow for any higher resolution)
At any rate, good to know you were able to get things going!
