How does network work in Fedora7

I installed Fedora7 and set up the ip and subnet mask. But I can't ping this machine from other machines in the local net area. It seems this machine is separated from others.

You're going to need to post a little bit more information in order to narrow down what the exact problem may be ...

How are you ping'ing the machine....e.g. ping IPADDR or ping HOSTNAME ?? You need to make sure you can resolve the hostname is pinging the hostname, i.e. add it to /etc/hosts or make sure the DNS zone files have the machine in them (if using DNS)...or /etc/resolv.conf -- etc etc ...
