Setting up a mail server

I just wanna ask if it is required to have my own domain or have to buy/register my own domain before setting up my own mail server....

Is it possible to set-up a server even without having to register or buy a domain......

Help me please....

Yes, it is possible. However, many large email providers like AOL will reject any email sent from a dynamic IP address or an IP address that doesn't resolve to the DNS name that the email claims to be from.

So you'll have issues like that... but there isn't any problem with sendmail to prevent this from working.

to the best of my knowledge, mail servers require a domainname in their configuration. If you don't have your own, what will you set it to? Also, how will people reply to the email?

By the way, registering a domainname and setting up dynamic dns is easy and cheap. You register a domain name for around $8/year. also, most dynamic dns services have a 1 time setup fee; usually $20-$40. So, you could have a domain for say, 5 years, and it will cost you a total of $60 at the most.
