How to Smooth your fonts using hinting

Originally it was taken from a post in the ubuntu forums. I'm putting it here for fedora types

Drop this file in your home directory renamed to ".fonts.conf" and log out and in again. It turns on auto hinting and makes your fonts sexy smooth.

Attached Files
File Type: conf .fonts.conf (202 Bytes, 181 views)

No discernible difference on (though, I am at 1920x1200). Did anyone else?

...

And I think Fedora might be different, there not being a /etc/fonts/local.conf

$ grep -r -i hint /etc/fonts/*
^ shows many hits for individual font config files

Anyone know how to check if autohinting is on by default in Fedora?

Wow... thats like a three year old Ubuntu thread you just pulled up! I don't see an easy way to look up whether autohinting is enabled, but I suspect it is. Also, you could create a /etc/fonts/local.conf as it is referenced in the fonts.conf file (in fact it is recommended to make changes in the local.conf file, as the fonts.conf gets automatically written and the system will overwrite your changes without checking)

Yeah I've used it the last few versions in fedora I understand its an old thread but unfortunately I haven't seen it posted here.

Maybe an easier way to do it after doing a bit more research.

System -> Preferences -> Look and Feel -> Font

Click the details button bottom right.

You can check what your hinting is set to in there.

I've always found that the easiest way (for me) is to go into the gconf-editor and go to the fonts section. Set rgba with full hinting and it cleans up the fonts a lot.

A bit more research is that Fedora turns off hinting. http://bugzilla.livna.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1473#c0

Hence the reason for using the file.
