Trying Omega as a VM via KVM on Fedora host.

Omega is to Fedora what Mint is to Ubuntu, at least that is my impression. I wish they would make it fit on a cd though, but the distro is a great idea.

Google Chrome OS 0.5XXX (don't remember the XXX) x86. Apparently it is an early beta. It is based in openSUSE 11.1 (weird for me) and runs fine at least at VBox level. Tonight I'll try it in my older laptop.

Thanks,
Joe.

I am currently trying Google Chrome OS 0.5. It is based on openSUSE 11.1 and is running OK so far; I must say openSUSE has improved because about 15 months ago the guys wasn't even able to pick the sound card.

Apparently the system includes GNOME 2.24.1, kernel 2.6.27 and recent software like 3.0.0 (OK, not that recent), of course Google Chrome (the browser) is included as well.

There are some issues with the software (this is truly a beta version) which can be blamed upon openSUSE of course like some YAST shortcomings (package dependencies), some 'no shows' ("System monitor" does not show up when summoned), etc. I don't consider it worthwhile (at least for me) to keep trying to fix those issues so for the moment I'll replace it with Debian or something else.

Talking about Debian, I really expected Google to base it's OS on it.

Thanks,
Joe.

Downloading GNU/Sourcemage, I've used it before but will try it again. It's "based on a Sorcery metaphor of "casting" and "dispelling" programs, which we refer to as "spells", and a package manager called "Sorcery".

What's the only thing geekier than using Linux? Using a distro that self-consciously incorporates jargon from RPGs.

The only thing that could possibly be nerdier is porting this "Sorcery" to Gentoo.

Anywho, I dl'd a few isos for Sidux overnight a few nights ago. Haven't got around to installing it yet.

Hey, old Dungeons and Dragons players (like me!) have to use SOMETHING!

@joe: So Google Chrome is based on openSUSE? I have never heard about this before!

Got it here http://getchrome.eu/ (I think I arrived there from a Google page) don't know how official it is.

Thanks,
Joe.

EDIT: I am starting to think I was misinformed somewhere because that does not resemble this official screenshot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ch...1_App-Menu.png

That was a fake. Someone used susestudio and created this false ChromeOS.

Try this instead: http://lifehacker.com/5473768/chromi...menus-and-more

It's a true unofficial build...since no usable official one exists.

Rats, I wasted a CD. Should have imagined.

Thanks for the other link,
Joe.

For more than a year I've been happy openSUSE 11.0 user.
Currently I'm trying out Fedora 12.

The reasons for my interest in another distro are following:
  • in openSUSE 11.0 I can't control the display brightness on my HP nc6000 notebook
  • in the openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 desktop effects do not work with my ATI Radeon 9600 graphics adapter, it says "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware configuration."
  • in openSUSE 11.2 my other system (HP dc7100) does not shutdown, due to some HAL policy issue
  • since Linux Distribution Chooser advised both openSUSE and Fedora as 100% match, I think it is the right time to see what Fedora can do for me

So far I find both Fedora and openSUSE good distros. In OpenSUSE it is somewhat easier to configure the applications, such as Compiz, Skype, MPlayer. Recently I discovered AutoTen application which significantly speeds up Fedora configuration (and I'm very grateful for that).
Although I like the Fedora look and feel, the new GNOME look and feel in openSUSE 11.2 is just fabulous. I'm very sad to leave openSUSE, but I'm also enthusiastic about becoming Fedora user.
