Screen res. problem at boot time - F6

After installing Fedora 6 my screen resolution was 1920x1200 which is not supported by my monitor.

I was still able to see the login screen and log into my account. I then changed the screen resolution and refreshing rate and everything was fine until I rebooted.

The problem is that I go back to the 1920x1200 res. at the login screen and when I log in the screen res. is changed to my user setings with the adverse effect that the OS hangs for a while and either send me back to the login screen or simply force me to restart the computer. Once in a while, the OS will do the resolution switch properly though but most offen it won't.

Which file do I have to modifyand what line do I have to add or tweek so the boot time screen res. matches the user res. so the OS doesn't hang.

My video card is a TNT 32.

To change the resolution that is in effect after you login:

Modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Change the "screens' section.
Change the "Modes" line that corresponds to the Default depth you are using (probably Depth 24)
Put the resolution you want to get as the first (leftmost) entry in the Modes line.

The section looks like this:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

I don't know whether this fixes the resolution on the login screen.

Wonderfull. It worked beautifully.

By restricting the resolution options in the config file the OS picks the highest one at login time. I didn't try rebooting yet but at least the login screen is easily readable now.

Thankx in a million
