vino server and Beryl/Compiz

On F7, if I have beryl on a host computer that is running the vino server (gnome remote desktop), I am able to log into it using vncviewer and move the mouse cursor around, open windows etc... but none of the changes are reported back to the client. I.e., the desktop as seen by the client shows no changes (not even when the main menu pops up). If I turn off beryl on the hose, it all works fine. Does anyone know what the deal is? Is this a problem with vino, beryl or Xorg? Any plans to fix it?

The VLC protocol for sending screen images over the network is what is used by the vino server. Roughly speaking, the VLC protocol does not currently support any 3D stuff like OpenGL etc, and I don't know of any plans to support this. Therefore Compiz/Beryl etc will not work over VLC or vino.

There are all sorts of technical issues of doing 3D stuff over the network, like sending all the 3D data and textures etc, which can be massive amounts of data. The alternative is for the server computer to render the 3D image and then stream the result. This will probably be the way, that Compiz/Beryl network use will happen. Look at VirtualGL to see a possible implementation of this.

I would think that it might be possible to translate the compiz beryl manager effects to simple 2D motion for the purposes of VNC. I.e. have compiz translate what it is doing to something like metacity which could then be sent over the network.

In case anyone is interested, this was fixed in the latest vnc (included in fedora 8) - now remote desktop and compiz play nicely. Hurray for progress.
