BIOS Error #81
Trying to use the Fedora Core Live CD on my brand new tx1120us notebook from HP. I love this piece of hardware, but for obvious reasons cannot live without my Fedora Core installation.
I'm not an expert, but have installed FC5 and FC6 on several machines, from my Thinkpad t43 to my HP Desktop and my son's Gateway Solo. when I put the Live CD in the drive and boot i get a "BIOS Error #81" and it will not move past that point.
I can get other distros to boot, with mixed functionality, but would like to get FedCore7 to work so i can install it in a dual-boot configuration with Vista (I need it for work stuff). I was hoping to use the Live CD to verify my HW functionality before installing it permanently.
Any suggestions appreciated...

After some deeper searching I found this thread on under the laptop section
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=154482
this notebook is the base model for the tx1120us. So I will be following that thread to see if I can resolve my issues there. Will report any differences specifically related to the tx1120us model.

This is a 32 bit Live CD isn't it?
"Some" say using a 32 bit SMP kernel gives this error on a 64 bit cpu.(does on mine too in F7 32 bit on a AMD 64x2 TL60)
but mine boots past it ok (hard drive install,,,not a live cd) and quickly.
Hope ya find your solution.

Why 32 Bit vista on 64bit Machine?
Yeah in my 'infinite wisdom' (whatever that is haha) I flipping realized I was using the 32bit Live CD and decided to download and try the 64bit version, as I am using the AMD 64 X2 turion (which is 64 bit correct?).
I guess I assumed because it shipped with the 32 bit version of Vista (What is that about?) it was 32 bit. Kind of lame if it's a 64 bit CPU to ship me a 32 bit OS installed. lame.
anyhow I will report back once I get the live 64 on here and let you know how it goes.

I just bought a notebook (Fujitsu-Seimens AMILO LA1703-B3203), When I install Fedora7 and UbuntuStudio7.04, it both display " PCI: BIOS Bug #81", but at last both are installed.
But UbuntuStudio7.04 can run, there is graphic display (it seems system ajust it self), but there is no sound at all.
For Fedora7, I installed twice, installion both OK, and set user account but rerun it, there is nothing show on screen.
I daunt there are problem in Graphic driver and audio driver. (graphic card is VIA Chrome9 HC IGP WDDM, audio card is VIA High Definition Audio).
As BIOS Bug #81, I do not know is it connect to the problem? and How to fix it?

Update
Well I have given up on FC7 for the present. I am was able to force it to boot long enough to install it but then I had a myriad of problems ranging form no sound to hardlock ups forcing a poweroff and reboot.
At current, i have been successful in installing Slax and Knoppix, but I have been unable to find any distro that allows me to use my sound card. for some reason the RealTek Hd audio chip is a mother to get working in Linux. I might end up buying one of those cheap USB audio dongles to get sound. It would still be better than living with Vista.
Thoughts or comments welcome. Im exhausted with this project. Have even considered buying a different notebook entirely.

I try several distr. of Linux.
(1)Fedora 7 DVD: "PCI: BUG BIOS #81 found", after installed and reboot, go on until "local cast: login" no graphic show up and the system is stuck. I think the problem is video card/driver, or xorg.conf.
During installation, no sound for audio test.
(2)Fedora 7 live-cd : not work, no any graphic.
(3)Ubuntu 7.04 Live-cd: "PCI: BUG BIOS #81 found" and "Failed to alloocated mem resouce #6".
It works, screen resolution only 800x600, the graphic is too big, but cannot continue installing to hard disk.
No sound.
(4) UbuntuStudio 7.04: "PCI: BUG BIOS #81 found" and "Failed to alloocate mem resource #6".
after installed, it works, graphic is OK.
But no sound at all.
(4), Ubuntu 6.10: no bug no fail.
It works. Screen resolution can be 1024x768.
Install to hard disk successfully.
But no sound.
My notebook is Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO La1703-B3203, 512M memory, 80G hard disk. Each partition for LINUX is 10G.
Graphic card: VIA Chrome9 HC IGP WDDM
audio card: VIA High Definition Audio

BIOS bug 81 is related to acpi and timer chip pin #2 ??
Known bios problem with work arounds in most kernels...or using pci=noacpi (and if that one won't work, try acpi=off instead) as a kernel boot parameter... IF the system doesn't boot after install
add it on the line where "rhgb quiet" is by
hitting a down arrow when it shows "booting Fedora kernel xxx.x..x"
hilighting the top kernel shown..
hitting an "E"
and one more down arrow key and another "E" key to edit and add that "pci=noacpi" part...(or the acpi=off)
hit enter key when done..
and then the "B" key to boot.
If the thing won't even install from the dvd/cd/network....
try installing with
Linux pci=noacpi (or the acpi=off)

Ok so I was able to get the FC7 CD to boot and run, even install but I am unable to get my audio to work, after trying just about every thing I can find, so now I am trying to figure out how I can install a new kernel (I understand 2.6.22 seems to work)

I have a laptop with a 64 bits CPU too (see signature) and the PCI: BIOS Bug #81 error started to appear after I updated the BIOS (it is Phoenix BIOS).
It appears in both Ubuntu and Fedora but is "harmless" (it boots and so works). It does not appear in Fedora 7 x86_64 though.
Thanks.
Joe.

The 32 bit kernel probably needs to set things up a different way to the 64bit. Hence you see the error in 32 bit and not in 64 bit.

The problems I had with the 32 bit version of Fedora 7 are gone in Fedora 8 so far. The liveCD boots OK and installs as expected, the installed system does show up the BIOS BUG 81 thing but it is alright. Before the machine wouldn't boot unless it had a USB mouse attached, now, with Fedora 8, the laptop is free now, and perhaps your problems are solved as well.
Thanks.
Joe.

I am using Fedora 8 on my laptop. I have had a few problems (needed noacpi to boot the install cd and install. I guess the bios bug #81 is really there for the bios makers and manufacturers to prod them into doing something about thier bios'.

I had the same error on my laptop dv2415nr HP, until after I did
it seems that the newer kernel is what fixed it. If I were you I would give fedora 8 a shot. You'll end up having to upgrade in 6 months anyway if you don't. So, why not install it now?
