alsaconf?

I am trying to transition to Fedora 7, and so far it's been easy, but I can't get my new Plantronics .Audio 500 USB headset working in Skype. Both "less /proc/asound/cards" and "less /proc/asound/devices" show that it is detected fine. I can get the headphones to work by setting the usb devices in the Skype settings, but not the mike. I used the same config in Ubuntu Feisty and it worked perfectly.

Most of the guides say to mess about with alsaconf, but it is not installed on Fedora and it's not in the repositories under that name.

Is this available for Fedora or is there an equivalent?

Try yum install alsa-tools. I'm pretty sure that you'll find alsaconf within.

As I expected, I couldn't compile it, so I gave up.

On a brighter note, that was not the problem. The mike was muted.

Using the soundcard number out of /proc/asound/cards, I tried:

alsamixergui -c 1
or
alsamixer -c 1

I unmuted the mike and after that it worked fine.

As soon as I did that I was able to test Skype using the automatic test user - echo123.

Apparently, the microphone is muted by default because of feedback problems with some laptops on boot.

Assuming that a mic was actually shown on my system (there is one) how would you unmute it?

Cool Found a work around for the Realtek HD Driver installation error can't find alsaconf!

I know this is going to sound weird but they must of forgot to pack the file in their package. I tried to install the Realtek AC97 Codec driver and it oviously said that there was no supported sound cards but when I tried to install the Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver it worked and didn't give me the Can't find the alsaconf error no more. So for anyone who ever is having trouble this is the work around!! It worked on Fedora 10 x86_64.
