Console hangs when "Desktop Effects" disengages (e.g., upon logout)
Symptoms: Window decorations and Gnome panel icons disappear, then all progress stops. The mouse can move, but there is no response to clicks nor to the keypress C-A-Bksp or C-A-F1. I have left it that way for hours to see whether it would get unstuck; it did not.
The symptoms occur:
- when I choose System->Log Out
- when I choose System->Shut Down
- when I turn off Preferences->Look and Feel->Desktop Effects
The symptoms do not always occur. On occasion, the logout or shutdown works as it should.
To end the paralysis, I can go to another computer on the network, ssh in and "pkill -9 Xorg".
During the paralysis, Xorg takes 100% of the CPU:
$ top -b -n 1 | grep Xorg
5866 root 25 0 49868 20m 9824 R 100 1.0 1:38.77 Xorg
In /var/log, the Xorg.0.log does not have messages at the time of the symptoms.
