Console hangs when "Desktop Effects" disengages (e.g., upon logout)

Console hangs when "Desktop Effects" disengages (e.g., upon logout)

Symptoms: Window decorations and Gnome panel icons disappear, then all progress stops. The mouse can move, but there is no response to clicks nor to the keypress C-A-Bksp or C-A-F1. I have left it that way for hours to see whether it would get unstuck; it did not.

The symptoms occur:
  • when I choose System->Log Out
  • when I choose System->Shut Down
  • when I turn off Preferences->Look and Feel->Desktop Effects

The symptoms do not always occur. On occasion, the logout or shutdown works as it should.

To end the paralysis, I can go to another computer on the network, ssh in and "pkill -9 Xorg".

During the paralysis, Xorg takes 100% of the CPU:

$ top -b -n 1 | grep Xorg
5866 root 25 0 49868 20m 9824 R 100 1.0 1:38.77 Xorg

In /var/log, the Xorg.0.log does not have messages at the time of the symptoms.

About the victim:

$ uname -srvpi
Linux 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 15:37:31 EDT 2007 i686 i386

$ grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -v kbd
Driver "nvidia"

$ rpm -q --all | egrep -i -- -n\(ou\)?v\|compiz | sort
compiz-0.3.6-8.fc7
kmod-nvidia-100.14.11-1.2.6.21_1.3228.fc7
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-2.0.96-2.fc7
xorg-x11-drv-nv-2.0.96-2.fc7

amturnip,

Although you may not find a solution to your problem, please have a look at this thread:

coming in late to this ....maybe this is related to the link hobashira posted....

but there is also a fairly well know issue with nvidia driver + compiz on shutdown or logoff from Gnome/MetaCity

See the details here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=93001

I experience simm. problems as you under fc6 and f7 -- rolling back to earlier nvidia driver clears up the problem....

hth....

Hi amturnip,

Exactly the same problem here with exactly the same drivers.... on a XFX 7900 GT (PCI) 256Mb

$ uname -srvpi
Linux 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 15:37:31 EDT 2007 i686 i386

$ grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -v kbd
Driver "nvidia"

$ rpm -q --all | egrep -i -- -n\(ou\)?v\|compiz | sort
compiz-0.3.6-8.fc7
kmod-nvidia-100.14.11-1.2.6.21_1.3228.fc7
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-2.0.96-2.fc7
xorg-x11-drv-nv-2.0.96-2.fc7
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-100.14.11-1.lvn7

In /var/log, the Xorg.0.log has no messages at the time of the symptoms.

GLXGears starts fast, but slows down immediately and slows down the system.

$ glxgears
4141 frames in 5.2 seconds = 797.258 FPS
1734 frames in 5.3 seconds = 324.669 FPS
1704 frames in 5.7 seconds = 298.144 FPS
1608 frames in 5.0 seconds = 321.600 FPS
1591 frames in 5.0 seconds = 315.131 FPS

Did you find any solution for this issue??
