I hope there is a Yum update soon. For the time being I have refrained from installing more packages (other than the ones I really need) with Yum, for all the rest, there's always good-ol 'rpm'

Hi,

I've been using Debian Etch for a while now and I'm loving it. I can't say which Linux is better (Deb or Fed) because both are marvelous.
About install, you said it looks like an old RH6... well, maybe you used the text install? To use the gui install mode type "installgui" and hit enter.

One of the first reviews I read about Etch was this one from Lunapark6 and he configured the repositories and installed NVidia drivers w/o any problems. I use ATI and no problems too. Take a look:
http://lunapark6.com/debian-40-etch.html

About Synaptic... IMO it works better than Yumex, lighter and faster.

Look folks, this was never intended to be another edition of the Distro Wars.

Those of you who are so enamored of Debian are perfectly welcome to your opinions and preferences, and I do sincerely wish you well.

However, the simple fact is I can (and have) used Fedora right along side RHEL, Solaris, IRIX, and yes, even Windows server 2003 in a 24/7 production oriented data center run by an agency of the federal gov't. Based on the 3 days or so I've spent poking at Debian, I'm reasonably certain it would not be useful to me in that environment.

I thought, based on what I'd heard, that it might be. I was wrong. My bad. No need to excited about it.

Oh, and BTW, the folks at forums.debian.net still haven't sent me a registration activation email. Disappointing....

Regards,
Bert

Add me to the Debian fan club, I currently have a Cobalt Qube2 running Debian Etch as a log and mail server and also have it on one of my desktops and I have never had an issue with it either through the install or day to day operations.

I agree with what JN4OldSchool said:
Quote:
This is very unusual and I can tell you for a fact that debian is probably the most "perfect" distro out there in the sense that it is the very essence of Linux.
AND

The biggest (and only) negative thing I can say about etch is it is just damn boring! No updates, no breakdowns, no problems. It just sits there. It like just always works. Like driving a Ford sedan. This is why I stay with Fedora. Debian just leaves me...bored...
One of the things that amazes me about the Debian project is the sheer number of platforms it supports. The fact that you can install the current version of Debian on an ancient Cobalt Qube2 without a single hiccup really amazes me

What were you trying to install with apt-get? It resolves dependencies extremely well.

I run Debian testing with no issues whatsoever.

Distro wars?
If they ever end, we will all be using that "other" OS cuz it's the last one standing.
Long live Distro Wars!!!!! (kinda sounds like a game don't it? but if there's just one player, it's not much of a game anymore)
Long live choice.
Exercise your choice of distros/OS--flame all who stand in your way! (politely of course)
Long live Desktop choices! Stand your ground and protect (use) yours from all who have a differing opinion.
Having my own personal choices between distros/desktops is nice--and screw all who those don't like the same thing that I do.
Distro/Desktop wars forever! (hopefully).
Remove "choices" and we are all using--a WAG anyone?

Yeah, that's right. I started it, but like I said, it was never intended as a "hair pull".

Check the very last line of my original post.

Adventure?!?! Propeller heads like me have no such sense. Or maybe that should be no sense, period.

As far as standing my ground goes, what's the point? As I've already explained, the whole adventure was just to evaluate Debian for potential use in a production environment. I remain convinced that it wouldn't be appropriate for that purpose, at least where I work. Others are apparently very happy with it for other applications, and that's fine.

I'll most likely continue to poke around with it if for no other reason that to satisfy my sense of morbid curiosity. I'd still like to get the beryl/gnome-terminal transparency issue I described fixed, but beyond that, it's not worth any particular angst.

Regards,
Bert

Oh good grief.... Your want choices? Next time, try the decaf

If I have seen a rock solid Linux distro that is definitely Debian 4.0, the only complain I could have with it is that it does not have the very latest packages, and that Beryl does not work with my ATI card under it (of course it is not Debian to blame).

It is also suitable for offline systems because of the 3 DVDs set.

I'm not sure that is an edge, though, as much of Debian's strength is apt-get and the ability to install from the network.
