Updates fail after upgrade to Fedora 7 (from core6)

Hello there,

Upgrades are failing since I upgraded to:
--------------------
[tdijkstr@snow ~]$ uname -a
Linux snow 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 #1 SMP Wed May 23 22:47:07 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[tdijkstr@snow ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)
--------------------
I upgraded from Fedora Core 6. The automatic upgrade (graphical) failed. To investigate I ran 'yum update' from the command line. (tried a few variations w. --obsolete etc.) but the result is this:

-----------------------
Transaction Check Error:
file /sbin/mkinitrd from install of mkinitrd-6.0.9-7.1 conflicts with file from package mkinitrd-5.1.19.0.3-1
file /usr/share/applications/pidgin.desktop from install of pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc7 conflicts with file from package pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc6
file /usr/share/man/man1/pidgin.1.gz from install of pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc7 conflicts with file from package pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc6
file /usr/bin/gcore from install of gdb-6.6-15.fc7 conflicts with file from package gdb-6.5-15.fc6
file /usr/share/info/gdb.info.gz from install of gdb-6.6-15.fc7 conflicts with file from package gdb-6.5-15.fc6
file /usr/share/info/gdbint.info.gz from install of gdb-6.6-15.fc7 conflicts with file from package gdb-6.5-15.fc6
file /usr/share/info/stabs.info.gz from install of gdb-6.6-15.fc7 conflicts with file from package gdb-6.5-15.fc6
-----------------------

Any ideas? Thanks.

It failed as in it didn't complete?
It crashed or hung up?

Did you re try the upgrade from the dvd?

You can't upGRADE FC6 to F7 with yum.
You need the dvd and you boot up into its anaconda.
Select your system to be upgraded and it runs, treating the old system like data and updating with add, change, remove type activity. It knows what it has to do, including changing the version number and the repos. You may or may not need kernel parms to bypass known problems depending on you hardware.

To be clear:

- Had Fedora Core running for quite some time
- Downloaded / burned DVD w Fedora 7.
- Did the upgrade > all OK.
- Right after that updates are failing

Thanks.

It may be an acrh problem for x86-64?

Check you repros and turn off everything but fedora, ferdora-updates

You should not have any fc6 packages left on your system after an upGrade?

Download those fc7 rpm's and put into a folder on /home/you/rpmfolder
write down the rpm.fc6 names

Ctrl-Alt-F3
root
password
rpm -e rpm.f6 --nodeps
...for each

cd /home/you/rpmfolder
yum update localinstall=/home/you/rpmfolder

and see what it says about deps

Check my yum command with man yum coz my gterm will not su - will no longer accept my password?
I'm going to reboot.

thanks, I think we got something here; I added nash since it asked for it (dep) it now fails w. :

-----------
[root@snow upgrade]# mv /home/tdijkstr/Desktop/nash-6.0.9-7.1.x86_64.rpm .
[root@snow upgrade]# rpm -U mkinitrd-6.0.9-7.1.x86_64.rpm gdb-6.6-15.fc7.x86_64.rpm pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc7.x86_64.rpm nash-6.0.9-7.1.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
nash = 5.1.19.0.3-1 is needed by (installed) mkinitrd-5.1.19.0.3-1.i386
----------
Should I add that lower versioned nash rpm somehow?

I dont understand why you would have a i386 package on 64 bit arch ? ( mkinitrd-5.1.19.0.3-1.i386 )

try this to remove it if the last command fails

rpm -e mkinitrd-5.1.19.0.3-1.i386

then run this command again

rpm -U --replacefiles --replacepkgs mkinitrd-6.0.9-7.1.x86_64.rpm gdb-6.6-15.fc7.x86_64.rpm pidgin-2.0.1-1.fc7.x86_64.rpm nash-6.0.9-7.1.x86_64.rpm
