Thumbs up Ipcop Installtion Help

Hello all Linux expert, i totally new to Linux especially server and firewall administration.

I have realiased that my ISP always accessed to my network.

How this can be prevent and denied ?

I plan to install ipcop, hardened linux and smoothwall but i have read the documentation. Unfortunately, i cannot find it i understand.

Therefore, i post this thread in order to get some help.

Basically, my network is very simple.

I have one router and pc. Probably i don't want others pc access my pc before access the internet.(Future)

My ipconfig from window.

Connection-specific DNS suffix : streamyx
IP Address : 192.168.1.2 (Why my ip-addres i not 192.168.1.33) I guess my previous ip-address is hide from outside which is 192.168.1.33. I think i been compromised by my ISP.
Subnet Mask :255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1

I alos plan to buy another router which is Linksys wrt54g. Which is the best firmware for a IT student who want very secure internet connection.

Example DD-WRT or hyper. I want some free version but powerful. Linux is the best choice.

You don't need ipcop and smoothwall, the first is a fork of the second. You will need an old machine to host the ipcop/smoothwall installation (a very low spec. will suffice). You cannot install either alongside other software.

I don't use ipcop but for smoothwall you will need two network cards, as you rightly say designated red and green. You should connect you router to the red and your pc/s to the green.

Further down the line, if you want to allow others access to the internet but not to your machine you may find you need a dmz (orange for wired, blue for wireless). That will require another network card, or two if you require both wired and wireles. I think I'd try for a simple setup first.

Smoothwall has an active and helpful community at http://community.smoothwall.org/forum. You'll probably get a better response there.

Hope this helps - its not nearly as difficult as it sounds!

Just keep in mind that IPCop and Smoothwall are stripped down dedicated firewall distributions, you cannot use the machine as a workstation too. You will need a dedicated machine for either package.

I have used both IPCop and Smoothwall and it is just my personal preference but I use IPCop. If you are having troubles with the online documentation there is a very active mailing list with lots of people willing to help out...

http://www.ipcop.org/index.php?modul...g=IPCopSupport

I think one of the main reasons I prefer IPCop is that it is more frequently updated and there is ongoing development to improve it. There isn't a whole lot of Smoothwall code left in IPCop and one of the goals of the development team is to eliminate all of it. Smoothwall is a commercial company and their focus is their commercial product and the free version of Smoothwall (Smoothwall Exress) has been pretty static over the years.
