No response to ping -b

when I ping the broadcast address my fedora box is not replying.

I'm doing this in order to update the arp table in another linux box (ping source) but fedora seems not to reply to broadcasts only when I directly ping the fedora box I get a response.

I'm suspecting there's a security parameter somewhere that's restricting the replies to ping broadcast.

Any ideas

Perhaps it's just getting ignored

An ICMP Echo Request destined to an IP broadcast or IP multicast address MAY be silently discarded.

but in any case it must be optional to discard the packets or not ... I wonder if it's something (to discard ICMP req to an IP bradcast) you can turn on or off in the kernel

you're right, it can be enabled
Code:
sysctl -w net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=0
